OK. I am doing a complete engine overhaul this winter. I'm looking for opinions on what set up would produce more power and what kind of hp difference am I looking at?

Anyway...The first set up consists of:
Stock Block
Windage tray
Main Girdle
DSS pro-lite pistons
Custom cam
Roller Rockers
Holley Systemax II
AFR 185 aluminum heads
255lph f/p
75mm maf
70mm tb + spacer
Rotating assembly balanced and blueprinted
Long tube headers + H-pipe dumped

The other set up I was consider is ESSENTIALLY the same except using stock heads and stroking it to a 331.

Later on I will add the heads, but right now I am considering this because of budget purpouses. It is easier to swap a set of heads than it is to swap a crank shaft Obviously, once I put the heads on, the engine will produce more hp with the stroker and a fair bit more torque. What I want to know though is what kind of hp difference will I be looking at in the mean time between the two of them with just stock heads on the stroker?

The engine will be running about 9:1 compression for future supercharger

So STOCK heads vs afr's would be 70-80 hp??

I didn't think it would be that huge of a difference.

i do, especially on a bigger cube motor that cant breath because your choking it with the stock heads. Im thinkin the 302 with those parts will be makin about 350-360 hp. Same stuff on the 331 and im thinkin about 385-395 hp. But without those heads, in reality i think you would be lucky to break 300 hp even with the 331. basically the 331 is gonna add about 10% more power vs a 302.

Let me save u some money on the first combo...

Anyway...The first set up consists of:

Stock Block(BONE STOCK)
Custom cam
Roller Rockers
Holley Systemax II
AFR 185 aluminum heads
255lph f/p
75mm maf+ 24-30 lb injectors
70mm tb + spacer
Long tube headers + H-pipe dumped

The stock internals will hold more hp then the block will, its pointless to upgrade pistons and such in a stock block, unless u plan on swapping over to a race block...even with a supercharger. Now if u wanna do a 331, u really have no choice but to upgrade. Then u can throw that windage tray and main support in.

wouldnt you need to flycut the pistons for the 185's? off topicm but also, to run a big cam with TFS heads its a good idea to run aftermarket pistons, so that would be a scenario where you should upgrade.

Yep...most likely with the size valves on the AFR 185's on TW heads the pistons will need to be flycut/dremeled/replaced...

I personally like the freshening up the stock bottom end idea...go ahead and rebuild it...the rings and bearings would be cheap after you have done got the pistons and all...have your block bored to a 306 for a fresh cylinder wall...most machine shops charge around $30 bucks per cylinder (x8)...and then slap on some fresh set of heads and all that you have planned...don't forget to plan for all the gaskets (quality if you can) that you'll need...

I know how funds can go so...Good Luck
