Anyone have pics of side exit exhaust on an LX? I tried to search, but all the old posts no longer have pics in them. Also, i was thinking of running the bullet mufflers (2 1/2") with a single tip out the side. Will this be extremely loud? If it makes a difference, they will not be pointing straight out, they will be at a 45 deg angle. Any opinions, experiences, and pics are appreciated TIA

I'd post pics of my old notch, but I don't have a scanner - best I can offer is pics of pics, if that'll work.

Cheapest/Most reasonable side-exit exhaust would be to use a pair of Dynomax part #37676 mufflers (about $60 apiece through Summit, IIRC) that have 2.5" inlet/outlet on the same end of the muff, then plug in a 90* elbow to curve it off to the outside and either a straight extension (will exit right under the end of the door) or another 45* elbow (if you want it swept back and more towards the wheel, then cap it off with a slash-cut chrome tip of whatever type. Those muffs have a spot to re-use your factory muffler hangers on the back of 'em, so at the most you'll need to drill/bolt another hanger on the end of each tailpipe somewhere along the frame to keep 'em from knocking against the undercarriage.

This was the exact setup I had on the old notch, and it sounded/looked great, and I had no more problems with ground clearance than I did with regular tailpipes (the side-exit tailpipes don't hang any lower than the mufflers, themselves). Going to be bolting up the same setup on my current notch, too, because I'm sick and tired of having to fight with these stupid Dynomax tailpipes in combination of my even stupider UPR X-pipe - tails are CONSTANTLY banging/rattling up against something, and they're threatening to burn through the fuel lines coming out of the tank (started to melt a little, already).

EDIT: Oops on the part number. The one you'd be looking for is #17676 (Summit Racing has it listed as WLK-17676) for the 2.5" inlet/outlet size.

Been about five years since I last ordered 'em, so I guess my memory isn't entirely shot if I was only off by one digit... :D

I'll try to snap a pic of mine, its all 3" tubing into flowmaster super 40s into box tip SS side exits that are angle cut to match the body lines, looks very nice, sounds even better, by far the best system i've tried on the big block fox (and i've tried pretty much everything).

The car is being stored this weekend, taking carb off for tuning and old pony wheels are back on lol it looks weird with a 6" cowl. SOrry no sound clips though, i already put fogging oil in the motor so its sleepy time for the 466.

Well mine is custom hand made by me, its actually a 30* mandrel bend and it clears my subframes.

thx lol.

Yea i figured you working at that place youd do all the custom stuff you want, I was considering side pipes but after I saw how sharp the turn was after the mid pipe I said forget it.

The LX I bought for parts had sidepipes. It was hideous and sounded like crap. Whoever did it before my buddy bought it took the H-pipe, welded it DIRECTLY to one glass-pack on either side, and then turned them out before the wheels to a double ended tip. AND, it hung to low.

/Stainless LX pipes ftw
//why mess w/ perfection?

I've got to do this too, for the same reason as BlooDReigN. And I've got to do it before winter, so I can put the panhard in, so I can run my pony rims on my Cobra, so I don't need to buy 17" snow tires, so... ah, nevermind.

Somebody posted a bunch of great pics of the SpinTech setup on a grey GT a couple years ago. I can't find them either, but that's the direction I'm leaning since they sell a stepped SFC as well.

The Spintech kit is nice, sounds awesome, but is WAY overpriced for what little it is. I mean, sheesh, you'd think the stuff was made of Titanium, or something, for what they charge, especially since all you're getting is two flowtubes, two muffs, and two short lil' sidepipes (about, what, two foot long apiece?).

I don't buy into the sharp-turn argument. Has anyone ever bothered to look inside of a baffled muffler, lately? The exhaust gasses have to take MUCH sharper turns going through there - especially in something like a Flowmaster or standard Dynomax Super Turbo muff - and nobody says squat about them. Also, take into consideration that U-turn the gasses would normally have to make to get over the rear axle; same degree of bend (or greater) as the side-exit setup I've described above, and thus the same output.

I think that some folks have got the wrong pathway figured up with the side-exit setup I'm describing. The #17676 Dynomax muffs are SAME-SIDE inlet/outlet design (both fittings on the front end), not the usual offset/offset type with the inlet and outlet on opposide ends of the case (one front, one rear). I'll draw up a crappy MS Paint pic here in a minute to better illustrate the idea. Better still, I need to dig up those old pics of my other notch and take pics of pics (sometimes wish I had a flatbed scanner) to post for this. I've seen setups in the past where someone took a standard front/rear type of muffler and made a sharp 180* U-turn behind the muff, brought it around toward the front, then made another 90* bend (followed by ANOTHER 45* bend) to bring it out the side at a slanted-back angle; what I'm talking about just comes right out of the muff, goes 90* outboard, and that's it (or another 45* elbow back, if desired for looks).

If anyone wants to pony up the bucks for dyno time, I'll gladly do a before/after dyno run with my own car so I can show there is ZERO difference in power between a rear-exit (Pypes Violator) and side-exit (Dynomax #17676) exhaust. Of course, by doing so, I'll also get to have a nice readout of what my car's putting down as-is, too. :D

Here ya' go. Crappy pic quality, but hopefully enough to get the general idea. They're the only two surviving pics I could find of the old notch's side-exit exhaust; this was before I thought to add an extra 45* bend to sweep them backwards a bit (I'd just thrown a straight 18" length on the end of a 90* elbow on each muff) and also before I got around to adding hangers to the tailpipes to keep them from bouncing/thumping up against the frame.

Note that the tailpipes do not hang any lower than the mufflers, themselves, so there is NO loss of ground clearance over a stock rear-exit exhaust.

Also note that the paint on the car was much nicer than what I have on my current notch... :D

This is why race cars run straight through mufflers

I guess your right about the tailpipes going over the axle, maybe you dont lose any power, im not one to say, imo side exhaust has to be done PERFECT or it wont look good. I personally love my bullet mufflers with no tailpipes, i noticed the car rev up faster too from my flowmasters with tailpipes.

They also run straight pipes or open headers because they don't really need any backpressure whatsoever, because when you've got 500-1000+ horses on tap, losing low-end torque isn't really an issue, anymore. As far as street-driven mostly-stock chumps like me go, however, I don't want my exhaust to be TOO unrestricted, y'know? (Otherwise I'd run longtubes with 3" duals and dumps. :D )

I agree, though, side-exits are kind of like yellow paint on Foxes; unless it's done with a certain sense of deliberate planning and it all flows together, then it just looks like complete crap. Y'know, that fine line between drop-dead sexy and outright skanky ... kind of like how I see a lot of blondes and redheads. :D
