SIDE-EXIT TWO-WEEK UPDATE: After having the side-exits on for awhile now, I've given them a little time to break in the muffs and see if things are staying in place as they should. In short...
THE GOOD: Quiter at cruise, the Jeg's X gives MUCH better ground clearance than the UPR piece, and it doesn't wiggle an inch at all.
THE BAD: The tailpipes keep falling out of adjustment, even as tight as I've put the clamps, they keep drooping and scraping. (What is it with this friggin' car and its severe hatred for ground clearance?!?) Sure, I could either weld them or fab up some hangers for 'em, but ... there's more. For one, the exhaust tone has changed as the muffs have gotten past their initial quietness and such ... and not for the better. I've totally got the Uncle Jessie tow truck sound going on, now - more like friggin' $20 glasspacks than $55 Dynomaxes. Too "poppy" instead of raspy at WOT, car sounds like it's working harder than it really is at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle (at WOT, it sounds like the end of the world is coming), and I'm coming to terms with the fact that the swept-back idea on the exits just doesn't look right. I'm also suspecting that having them at an angle for some reason makes the exhaust gasses enter the interior as easily as a set of dumps, as opposed to having them exit straight out, as I about gagged when I stopped the car and popped the trunk the other day. (Not sure if it might also be due to the sunroof having been open, and/or the leaks at the downpipe connections.)
So, I'll man up and do the right thing by admitting my folly: I am NOT happy with the side-exits. Yes, that's right, I'm admitting that I made a stupid, stupid choice in setting my stuff up the way that I did - not so much the fact that they're side-exits, in and of themselves, just the way I went about doing them.
Oh well ... at least I've still got my Pypes Violators and SS tailpipes in perfect shape. I just need to find somebody willing to let me borrow their driveway and an electrical outlet for a couple of hours so I can set things right again. It was only a waste of about $150 (muffs, shipping, and tailpipes), since at least the X-pipe is as much as I could've hoped for... *le sigh*
