Looking to install 4.10's

Can anybody recommend a Mustang Performance Shop in the Chicagoland area than can swap out the rear end gears in my 2006 Mustang GT. Tried Packy Webb Ford and they want 5 1/2 hours ($528.00) and $75.00 for the oil. Would I be better off for warranty issues to buckup and have a Ford dealer install the Ford Racing gears???

my local Ford dealer (Walker Ford in St. Petersburg/Clearwater area) won't install the Ford Racing Gears...I was having a scheduled maintenance performed and asked if I could get it done at the same time. They said no, we don't install any parts other than oem because it will void the warranty on that part and we aren't allowed to void the warranty. I told them it was pretty dumb of them to sell the parts in their service department, but to not offer install on them...they just shrugged their shoulders. Hope you have better luck.

I am surprised your local Ford dealership will not install them.
Speak with the dealerships general manager. Call around, even beyond what you are willing to drive for examples to give your local guy.

I'm told my dealership here in NC will install Ford gears and flash your computer to calibrate the speedo for you as part of the service.

No warrantee issues here.

Bottom line..... I can not say enough good things about my 4.10's.
But do not have them installed by anyone without LOTS of experience with Fords. If you try to cut costs you run the risk of whiney gears.
I have them, and it sucks.

5 hours labor but they have a special for 419.00 and they won't mess with your warranty. They have done gears in two cars for me.

Is it worth it to upgrade from stock 3.55's to 3.73's?

I do a lot of city driving for my job and was wondering if making the jump to 3.73's would be beneficial for me at all. I would like to get 4.10's later on down the road once I am not driving my Mustang as a daily driver.

for the cost of the gears and the install, it is not cost effective, IMO. i would either wait, or just get the 4.10s now.

depends on who you talk to. some say stock gears, some say 3.73 and some say to go with 4.10s. a local speed shop here says 4.10s.

Yeah Im stuck on that issue too. I hear a lot of both. Get 4.10s! Don't get 4.10s! Blah blah I have no idea. I'm gonna REALLY have to research this before I buy mine but Im real confused at this point in time

I do both city and highway driving. (36K miles now on the car since 12/04)
The 4.10's have been wonderful. I have seen a drop in my MPG, but only a small jump (200 in 5th gear) in RPM's.
Of course my drop in MPG could be due to my foot being "into it" more.
The car is so much more fun to drive.

I do not believe the 3.73's would be as good of an investment, unless you were going to install a forced induction system at a later date.

A buddy of mine has an 05 GT with 4.10's and a supercharger. First gear is almost worthless as red line comes very fast at launch. He also rides the clutch A LOT to control speed? and has had to replace it once already.
Dont know. Some folks on this forum have the same set up and like it.

I've decided to go with www.speedinc.com...$189.99 for the 4.10 gears and $200. for the install. While the gears are being changed, I've decided to upgrade the rear end girdle with a new heavy duty T/A cover. Also getting the BMR adjustable panhard rod, upper panhard rod support and a panhard relocation bracket. Also installing a BMR boxed subframe connectors. Might do a set of LCM's too. Will let you guys know how it turns out...my appointment is Oct. 5th.

I don't think going from 3.55's to 3.73's would be worth the money at all. I'd say you'd need at least two jumps to make it worth the amount paid...i.e. 3.73's for autos and 4.10's for manuals.

You can probably get away with 4.10's if you have some REALLY good traction (slicks, LCAs, etc.). If not, you'll be buying tires every few months. 3.73's should work well with a medium range power adder.

The 4:10s are now in...while I was at it, I decided to add a new rear end T/A girdle (larger), new adjustable BMR adjustable panhard rod, a panhard rod relocation bracket and new panhard rod upper support. Also added new BMR lower control arms with poly bushings and BMR tubular sub frame connectors. I also purchased a Diablosport Predator to load the correct gear ratio and their 93 performance tune. The car launches hard and now really hooks up in second. Unfortunately it's been in the 30's here in the Chicago area the last 3 or 4 days and my summer tires just don't do the trick in this freezing weather. It is suppose to warm up into the 60's over the weekend so hopefully I will be able to push the stang a little bit harder.

Just wanted to say to anyone in the Chicagoland area looking to have 4:10 gears installed that Speed, Inc. in Schaumburg , IL. did a great job and very reasonable pricing. Installation for the gears was $200.00 plus $25.00 for fluids. Can't beat that deal!!!

I'm interested in swapping gears in mine as well. Being the auto trans, it needs some help. How many of you have the auto trans and are running the 4.10's? I know it was pretty common for the Fox and SN95 autos to use that gear, but what about the new 5 spd autos???? I'm not worried about mpg at all since this isn't my DD. It will however get driven for more than 100 miles at a time now and then.

I had 410s installed in my 06 GT auto. This car is now a BEAST. All I can say is WOW! There are two "downsides" for me. First, it is virtually impossible to get a set-up that will minimize the gear whine...a bit noisier than I would like. Second, you can sure tell a difference with the higher RPMs at about 80 to 90mph. 70 mph is not too bad.

Thanks RD. I have been doing some highway driving with the O/D off at about 80 or so to get some kind of idea how it could be. As long as they are installed properly, I don't mind a bit of noise...always have the Shaker1000 to cure that if need be.

How do you like your Bassani x pipe and after cat setup I have the Bassani axle back on my gt now and I have been really happy with it. Does is sound good with the x pipe?

If you can get your hands on a dial indicator you can do this job on your own. There is no special skill involved. Im suprised at how many pay so much to change gears. The hardest part of the entire job is getting your spacing right, but with a dial indicator you don't have to even think.

I knocked mine out on Thursday night last week - started at 6:30pm, was done and taking my test beat by midnight and I really worked slow. I bet I could shave at the least an hour and a half off the job. I stopped to eat dinner as well real quick. It's only labor intensive on these cars because of the rear disc brakes. You have to pull the calipers and rotors to slid the axles out.

You can save a ton of money if you want, by doing this job on your own. Every one is affraid of gears for some reason. There is no reason to be affraid though, with the right tools the guess work is eliminated.

ther is your answer. most people dont have access to the special tools required for a gear swap. also, the S197 rear end is more fussy than other rear ends. nobody really can point to an exact cause, but to set it up correctly without whine is challenging for many.

congrats on your install. which installation kit did you use when installing your gears?
