Looks like my car is getting paint very soon...

A buddy of mine works in a factory and does electrical/mechanic work for them, and a lot of times if they get a new machine in he'll paint it for them. They supply all the materials and even bought him a $400 paint gun. Well, turns out they ordered some really high quality PPG single stage paint that they're not going to use...it's automotive paint and everything. So, he can get this paint for free and said he'll paint my car for free so i can't pass it up...

The downside (of sorts) is obviously i don't get to pick out the color...and the color is very very close to Grabber Blue, maybe a shade darker. Now, i wouldn't pick GB if i had the choice, but it is different and i can't pass up a free paint job...it's better than primer.

Anybody by chance have any pics of grabber blue fox's? I know this has been asked before, and i've seen that road race hatch already, but what about coupes? I'm thinking i'll paint up the hood in satin black like the classics.

For FREE?do it,i think it would look o.k. in grabber blue.If you dont like it you can just primer it up again j/k. It will look fine.

i think that if you do the side moldings and window trim in the same satin black as the hood, it will look really good. ALL grabber blue would be too much i think...maybe black out across the headlight buckets/grill and then a center stripe up the center of the hood...that might look cool...kinda like i did with my old beater 79...

What's a gallon of ppg single stage running these days for a basic color? $250? So is color choice worth $250 or $300? I'd prob take the free bee an if I didn't like it, paint it again in a few years.

Haha, all I can think of is the bland colors that production/factory machines get painted. Also, if you're going to get the single stage base, what about a clear coat too? We're going to have to see an example of the paint you're talking about, not necessarily on a car... How about on an Okuma lathe?

But I never cared for yours,,, TILL recently. I thought it was just a junkyard dog you kept around for fun. But I recently listened to you exhaust clip and am VERY impressed! That thing sounds killer! And it run's in the 12's?

So getting this free paint job is a blessing! Like YOU said, it's BETTER then primer. And I love that color blue! I don't know any other 82's that are that color! I say go for it!

My $0.02...

A cheap crappy paint job is much worse than primer, and heres my reasoning:
A crappy paint job makes the car look crappy and abused, whereas primer makes it look like a work in progress.

Now if it's good quality paint, and your friend can lay a coat down real well then I say go for it. If it's a semi gloss or something and no body work is going to be done, I would say hold off, and spend the $400-500 for a decent single stage and have him spray it for free...

Either way post up if/when you do it!

I say "Go for it!" If you can't really afford a paint job and this is your only means to get one, then why not? My only concern is your friend's ability to lay it down correctly, without any runs, skips, or errors. Because it's going to be a single stage, you can still wetsand and buff it. That's something that shouldn't be skipped.

Grabber Blue is a very nice color but because you're painting the entire car, it needs some Black to break it up. Painting the window trim, sail panels, bodyside molding, headlight buckets and grill, and possibly hood scoop and the entire lower half of the car Black would make a world of difference.

I love grabber blue, I say paint the whole thing blue including the headlight buckets and the grill, but make the teeth in the grill black; then do the black sail panels and get some black window trim. Maybe paint the scoop black or do the whole cowl part in black.

Thanks man...i appreciate that a lot coming from you (since we've had our heated debates about stuff in the past..lol). It's more of a sleeper than intended because it looks beat down, it's just that i spend all my money on go fast stuff and i'm just now getting around to the looks department.

This is what i'm really concerned about...and i completely agree, i'd rather have perfect primer than crappy paint, which is really why it's still primered today. I've had a few guys who have offered to do cheap paint jobs for me but i'd rather stay away from orange peal and runs. The guy in question doesn't paint for a living or anything, but he did paint his engine bay and it looks perfect...of course that's not as major as doing the whole car but i think he could pull it off.

That's AWESOME! I don't mind at all. However, there won't be any molding stripe because 1) i don't care much for it, and 2) i don't have and won't be getting the side molding...it's staying all metal down the sides because the body actually matches the front bumper "molding" anyways. It'll definitely get the grill done in satin black like that, and probably a large portion of the hood too, plus the chrome is all going bye bye and it'll be satin black along with the sail panels and door window frame (sort of how the aero cars are all blacked out around the windows).

I do like the color, i just don't picture my car in that color, ya know? But, i think with the ARE rims that are in black, and with the right black accents, it'll look killer as long as it's smooth and buffs out nice.

If you wanna do another photoshop, do this pic and do a big fat 60's Mach 1 style stripe on the hood.

Yeah the doors are replaced...they're that maroon red color and look terrible, plus i've started sanding down the front so it really looks rough right now...you can kinda see it in the quarter mile vid i posted in the other thread. It's got some grey primer spots where i sanded down to metal. Plus i've got a new rear bumper cover going on because it's got a big hole in one of the corners. The biggest thing i've gotta do is get a new trunk lid because mine's rusting out underneath, and the rear passenger fender lip is a little dinted in and needs pulled out. Probably the only thing i'll have to spend money on is materials for doing the body work.

I have the option of adding pearl to the paint but i really don't know about that...

I would say no pearl, but it might look decent.

Yeah no worries they all look scary before paint. Mine was a multicolored mess. Then paint makes it all look right .

Does this guy have free primer too???

No primer is another thing i'll have to pay for but that won't cost too much. I don't expect a perfect show car paint job out of this...i just hope it looks as good as nice factory Fox paint, ya know? This won't be "THE" paint job for my car...it's going to be a dark charcoal color some day.
