Low Fuel Light?

Hi guys,

I just recently bought a 2000 mustang v6. The question I have is when exactly is the low fuel light supposed to come on? Does the needle need to touch the red area? I ran the car down to almost touching the red, but no light came on. I eventually gave up. I do know the light does work when i turn key to accessory mode.

Yes has to be down to the red to trip the low fuel light but at that point I still have about 3gallons of gas left
