Lower shift boot question?

I am doing the aode to 5spd swap and when cutting the tunnel I may have took to much material out to fit the 2 front lower shift boot screws in. How important is it to run the lower boot, do I have to ? Thanks

It helps keep the fumes out of the car somewhat.

so basically its not that big of a deal? I got a vert and the top is always down so.

It also reduces noise inside the car as well ask keeping dirt/water/other road debris from splashing up on the shift boot or into the shifter base.

I once had a rock bounce up and get stuck in the base, keeping me from going into 4th gear.

Ok thanks guys.. I have a round rubber boot that covers the shifter, but not the square one that has bolt holes. This on has a big ring spring to clamp around the base of the shifter
