My friend wants to know how low he can go. He has 245/45/17 rims and tire setup. He wants to lower his car and does not know what's the max drop he can do. He was thinking 2 inch front/rear.

Please help....pictures are welcome.

1.5" is the max you should go, any lower and the steering geometey will be so severly changed, that handling will be affected, the mustang was not designed to go more than 1.5"

2" drop with eibach sportline springs, 235/45/17 on the front, 255/40/17 on the rear... no rubbing. I highly suggest you get maximum motorsports c/c plates

I run 255/55/17's all the way around on 17x9 wheels using H&R Super Sport springs and I get a little rubbing in the rear and a lot in the front. It drops it about 2 inches and I had to put coil spring extenders in the front to get it back up a little. I wouldn't go over an inch on anything. I'm going back to Ford Motorsport springs personally...

mike, you probably already know this but it is the single biggest factor IMHO. "...every mustang is different" therefore you likely won't have the same results/issues as others. like stated earlier the general rule of thumb for fox bodies (and most cars) is nothing over 1.5" drop because after that the suspension gets kinda fugged up and negates the advantages of lowering. in all honesty the best drop from a handling perspective would probably no more than 1".

-steve

edit: i almost forgot....if he's lowering for the look and you just want to know about clearing that wheel tire combo i think you'll have no problems with anything under 1.5" but again, you'll just have to try...

I'm also running 17x9 wheels.
the tire you are using is to tall (to much side wall). if you were to use a 255/40 you probably wouldn't rub in the rear at all ( I don't rub). you are also a little to wide for the front, a 245/40 or a 235/45 may have been a better choice.

FWIW:

225/60/15 (stock size) is a 25.56" tire. you'll want to stay as close to that as possible to maximize performance. i recommend the following:

if you want to stay the same size on all four corners:

245/45/17 ---> 25.64"

OR, if you want big and small:

275/40/17 rear ---> 25.56" (stock height )

and finally, just FYI in case you need a smaller tire:

235/45/17 ---> 25.28"
245/40/17 ---> 24.68"
255/40/17 ---> 24.92"

and your 255/55/17 comes in at 27.89, more than 2" taller than stock. (FWIW that will KILL your braking distances)
