Lowering bucket seats? Need help.

My previous musclecar of 21 years was a 68 Camaro.
I liked how it had a thick belt line and made me feel as I sat very low and protected.

I've had my Fastback for 12 years and still am not used to the seating height.

Is there a way to lower the stock buckets? I was thinking of removing the sliding rail to gain some clearance. Is this feasable? Am I fooling myself?

They have had a few tech stories in Mustang Monthly and Mustangs and Ford about how to lower the seat height. They suggested removing the seat risers and cutting an inch out and welding them back in. You could check on one of their sites, I'm sure they have the full story.

That sounds interesting. I wonder if an inch is something one would notice...

Does anyone have further information about this? Maybe a link.

Lowering Seat Pans

I did the same thing on my 67 to make room for aftermarket seats that are a bit higher. I cut out the spot welds on the rocker and tunnel, but I just cut the floor attaching piece with an angle grinder.

If you have access to a welder, I say go for it.

Thanks. I initially did the seat pan drop and felt little difference. It helped, but it wasn't enough. The extensions work out great and may be all that is needed.

I drag the car now and have no issues using the 3 solutions I mentioned. I no longer hit the steering wheel and the door when shoving the clutch. It is now a non-issue. The steering wheel is more straight armed, kind of like a European sports car. The shifter seems right too.

About the only thing bothersome about moving the seat back 2" is that I really need to bend forward to adjust the radio, turn on the headlights or the wipers. I am told I look like a little kid when I am behind the wheel. You also can see the front of the track extensions so from an appearance point that might be a detractor. Irregardless, I can live with that because now I fully enjoy driving the car both on the street and at the track. Paint em' a low gloss black (or what ever the carpet color is) and forget them.

The above solutions also work great when installing later Mustang or non-Mustang seats and allow you to use the tracks that came with those seats.
