Lowering your mustang on a budget - with new parts!

wheels and tires are on. the tires are VERY quiet and VERY smooth. overall im pleased but the front has too much gap for my taste. im wondering now if i should have went with a 255/40/18 (26") rather than the 265/35/18(25.3"). would that have filled up the fenderwell more or just made the car sit higher in the front?

heres my options, as i see it, to lower my front :

*delete 1 or both isolators
*steeda x2 balljoints with spacer delete
*order 255/40/18s
*cut a hair off the springs

i'll gladly listen to other suggestions.

i want to try removing the front isolators to begin with but im worried about vibration, rough ride and noise. who has no front isolators and how bad is it? would it drop the car 1/4"-1/2"?

thanks guys

o, and the backs are 295/35/18s

We are in the exact same boat as far as front gap. I plan to cut a half coil off my BBK springs despite what everyone is going to say about it. My car isnt a race car, I just want a nice stance for cruising around. I am under the impression that removing the isolators will cause some squeaking over time. Youre welcome to try it for me and let me know!

I would give the springs a little more time to settle, arent they only like a month old? Guess I dont know how long it takes though, could have already happened.

yup, bout a month.

been reading several guys have had luck removing the isos and taping up the pigtails to keep it from squeaking. i wanna try it but im skeptical. they say its for about a 1/2" w/o the iso's

In my old '95 I had Sportlines as well. I took out the front iso's and wrapped the top and bottom pigtails in many layers of electrical tape. It worked fine, the ride was probably a bit rougher because of getting rid of the iso's but there was never any squeaking. I would try that before cutting those springs. Good luck man!

a bit rougher just over a bump or during constant driving? terribly noticable?

how much drop did that yield when you removed them?

thanks!

thanks nate !

dont really remember yours having a gap in front after your spring install

these silly sportline springs are so unpredictable :fuss: . next time i think its going to be H&R SS springs.

It did but not too bad may have been because I didn't put cc plates on right away and the strut was not in the correct position. I think a chin spoiler would make it look like it hugs a little closer to the ground till they settle all the way but that may not be the look you want.

a chin spoiler is def on my want list. while it wont have any bearing on helping the car sit lower in the front, it may give the illusion that it is lower than it really is. like you said, sortof make it hug the ground a little more.

the fender gap is killing me tho :nonono:

I had thought the 79-04 use the same part # on sportlines, but that thing looks really high up front. I never ran the iso's up front and it seemed at least an inch lower than yours in the nose. I never had a squeak issue. Try removing them before anything else. Also are you sure you're not sitting on the bumpstops? I know we got into this already, but with those shocks it likely came with an OEM length bumpstop. Might have to cut it down a tad.

Steeda X2's will hammer it, but it shouldnt be needed just now for those issues.

same part number. dont think im on the bumpstops. wouldnt it be a rough ride if i were? have read that installing the x2's w/o the spacer will drop a 1/2". just hate to spend $130 on bjs + labor cost + another alignment

you ran yours with no iso's in front at all? no squeaks, no rattles?

It's not as bad as you might think on the bumpstops....I've had to do it before with sportlines and GR2s on another car. Generally you will cut the bumpstop in half though. Made a huge difference with me. Yes, you will drop at least 1/2" with the X2's; and although they will help you out, I don't believe that it is a nessecary evil at this time. No, I've never ran the isos up front and never had any noise other than my old balljoints. There's constant pressure on the springs and they cup in the control arm. I've never had one move on me over a few stangs with no isos.

i guess ill check the bumpstops (will be a while b4 i can access a lift) but i have a bad feeling its just the uneven springs . the car rides really smooth and i have intentionally drove the car over some horrible roads without any bottom out. sure would be nice to be able to find a fairly easy/cheap solution tho.

if i do the balljoints, its just alot of extra money and another alignment. elaborate some more on why you think i shouldnt do bj's at this point. if i do different springs, more money more work. i hate to cut on these springs....bad idea? i guess the iso delete will be the cheapest but i dont know if that will drop the car to my liking or not. i know it wont be slammed but im not sure if a .5" will give me noticeable difference or not

if i mess with it too much, i may have to do another alignment anyway

Well, the balljoints are awesome in the fact they correct the rollcenter and alot of the geometry issues along with lowering the nose. I would say the actual height difference is closer to 3/4 inch installed without the shims despite the suggestion of 1/2" spacer making it the normal height relation...for whatever reason I just feel I got more drop than advertised. I'm not saying it's not that you don't need them or they would help; you just shouldnt have to resort to a set for this problem. Personally I would forgo them until you tried the other options.

You really shoudnt have to cut a sportline to get a stance for the most part; and they will settle in some. I wouldnt sweat the allignment too much unless you go to an X2.
