LX spoiler on a GT?

Has anyone ever done this?

I replaced the hatch on my 86 GT with a hatch from a 87-93 GT. I wanted to take the GT spoiler off and put my 86 GT spoiler, which looks just like the 87-93 LX spoiler, back on. Thought I would just have to drill some more holes and reroute the 3rd light wires. Wrong. When I placed the old 86GT spoiler on the new hatch it was an inch wider and hung over the sides of the hatch. WTH? Are the LX and GT hatches different? The 86 rear window and moldings fit fine on the 87-93GT hatch. What am I missing here?

that is really weird. i was under the impression all hatches, 79-93, were the same.

Yup, I would have bet money that they were all the same before this. The LX hatches have to have a different shape right at the rear where the spoiler sits.

There is no difference what-so-ever in the hatches, I am not sure what the deal is with the overhang, but the LX/86 GT spoiler does sit down and skirt the edges of the hatch, whereas the 87-93 GT wing is more perched atop the hatch.

Once you drill the proper holes and sit the wing down into position, it should sit where it belongs the way its supposed to

I can't picture how it would draw into position with the attaching bolts. The GT spoiler was flush with the edges of the hatch and the LX/86GT spoiler measures an inch wider at the base where it would be at the same place on the sides of the hatch. It would overhang a half inch on each side. There is an inch difference in the width at the mounting surfaces of the 2 spoilers.

the difference between wings are, the gt wing is open in the back and only bolts on the sides, and LX wing is full you cannot side under it like the Gt wing, and there is more bolts holding it down i had to put a lx hatch on my car and fill in the holes so i could use the GT wing.

There is a difference in the hatches. The shape is the same, but the difference is the mounting holes for the spoiler

On the GT, there are only a few holes on the edge.

On the LX, there are over 10 holes under the entire side of the spoiler. Some LX hatches are not painted under the spoiler.

So if you wanted to put a GT wing on an LX hatch, you would need to fill the holes, paint the hatch and then drill new holes.

I went through that entire process to put a Saleen wing on my LX hatch. They direct bolt up to GT hatches

OK, just for clarification, I want to put an LX/86GT spoiler on a 87-93 GT hatch. It should require drilling 10 holes for the mounting studs and screws and maybe 1 more for the wiring. The old holes for the GT spoiler would be hidden underneath the spoiler once it's installed.

My LX/86GT spoiler that I want to put on measures 57 1/4 inches wide where it would touch the hatch. The 87-93 GT spoiler that I took off the replacement hatch measures 56 1/4 inches where it touches the hatch. The LX/86GT spoiler that I want to install is 1 inch too wide for the GT hatch that I want to put it on. I'm saying it won't fit properly and that there must be a difference in LX and GT hatches. The only other explanation would be that the spoiler I want to put on is somehow warped out of spec. It looks fine and is quite a sturdy structure, I can't picture it flexing or moving at all. It seems to be flat and unwarped when I put it on a flat surface.

I don't want to drill 10+ more holes in the hatch just to see if the spoiler will shrink an inch by bolting it down. Does anyone have an LX spoiler that they can measure and see if the measurement is the same as the one I have?

Some of the holes should line up with the Lx Spoiler. And also if you do not fill the holes from the GT spoiler, and you just leave them open. Better watch out when you wash your car or it rains cause it'll leak right in. DOnt be a dumbass just fill the holes shut.

Here are a few pics of some LX's I have had and the way the spoiler fits. The GT one is designed totally differently so the entire appearance of a GT wing vs LX spoiler is different. Don't mind the damage to the car in the last one. That's proof of why older people need to be re-tested in order to retain a drivers license.

as a comparison, how a gt is:

the gt wing sits more on top of the hatch while the lx kinda wraps around it.

FWIW, Mike is a buddy of mine and is quite knowledgable (he makes me look like a total retard). Just in case that gives folks a point of reference (it's always nice to have a feel for the guy asking. No not that kind of feel you perv's! ).

And as I recall, he has test fitted the spoiler and even measured and compared them side-by-side.

Quick91LX thanks for the pics. Now I see what is meant by the spoiler kind of wrapping around the hatch instead of sitting on top of it. It does kind of hang over the sides and the rear of the hatch.

I set the spoiler with the studs still in it on top of the new hatch, I wanted to make some reference marks to line up a template I made to locate the holes. It so looked like it was way too big that I freaked and grabbed the tape measure. I need to remove the studs so it sits down flush and then line it up and make my reference marks. OK, this may work out yet.

Good point about filling in or covering the old holes from the GT spoiler.

A pic is worth a thousand words. I have all GTs so it's been a while since I've seen an LX in person. Thanks for the help guys.

They are completly different. Size wise and number of holes. You have to drill new holes and fill the old ones. I had to do the same thing in my 89 GT. I got a hatch and spoiler from an lx. Then bought a Cobra spoiler and hatch for $25 bucks. The hatch was bad so I took the spoiler off and tried to put it on the lx hatch. A few minutes turned into hours. But I learned the GT spoiler is just as much problem.
