LX tailpipes on a GT ???

Here's the deal. I have a new flowmaster 2 1/2" catback system with stainless tips that I bought to use on an LX project I never finished. Now my '92 GT needs the pipes. I have seen guys either use a cobra bumper or hog out holes in the factory bumper to fit the LX pipes but I dont want to do that. I have seen guys fab a drop bracket for the rear hangers to drop the pipes below the rear bumper and it looks good, but I am just worried about the pipes will be interfering with the rear end. Especially if the car is going to be lowered. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this and how it worked out.

In my opinion the classic look of chrome tips on early GTs and LX's are unbeatable. Even with holes cut in a GT bumper it doesnt give the awesome side look of the LX's and it looks better than lower the tail pipes which may scrape on upgrades or if you ever get the car towed.

I would just spend the extra cash and get the cobra rear bumper to go with it. I personally think the Lx pipes on a GT no matter what way you have it looks like Crap. But on a Lx or Cobra they look SIC.

cobra bumper is the only way to do it, any other way just looks like a hack job IMO

it can be done without "hacking" the rear valance. i happen to think that mine is tastefully done.

Ive seen it on a few gt's with both the holes in the gt cover and under the cover. If you install the under you will be scraping everywhere, especially when lowered. The holes on the gt cover look way crappy. Best would be to get a cobra bumper cover and call it a day plus it would look nice.

That is exactly what I was thinking . I think that looks very tasteful. I cant see having any problem with it scraping (unless I can stand it up that far). How did you fab the brackets to drop them down lower ??

I vote get a Cobra rear effect. But do not cut into the GT effects since it always looks like a ****ty job.

That car looks a little higher in the back then stock. If you lift the back of the car a little it might look good. But if youhave to back down a drive way on a slant or pull out of a parking lot your definately gonna srape. Just get the cobra rear and youll love it.

personally, i vote for the cobra rear too. but, i couldn't afford to do that at the time, so the result is what you see. one of these years when i get the car painted, i'll get the cobra rear valance and a cowl hood to go along with it. but for now, i think it looks pretty good.

actually, the rear is ~1" higher because of the 28" tires. at the time of that picture the front was lowered, but when i put the big tires on i ended up raising the front to stock. now it sits pretty level.

i do not have a problem with scraping, but i bet a car that was a little lower would scrape once in a while in odd situations.

for me, it was a pretty simple install. i have mac exhaust with ball and socket joints. the tailpipes bolt on after the axle, unlike the rest of the companies that bolt on before. all i had to do was angle the tailpipes down and tighten down the bolts. the rest of the cat-back exhaust stays put (no clearence issues with the axle). to finish it off, all i did was bought 2 more of the rubber hangers for the tailpipes to hang at the correct heigth. project finished.

My call is for the Cobra rear. IMHO at GT stang with holes cut in the rear fascia just looks like ass. But its your car.

although AXEMAN's GT looks that best out of al the stock bumper tail pipes i have seen, i would still suggest getting the cobra bumper. i think that they are pretty rear to see as not many people have them and the look of the pipes stabbing through is unbeatable. For $220 and a some more to prep its not TOO expensive but IMO its well worth the cost.

as far as I can tell, you can't see the tailpipes too much w/ the cobra bumper either, just the ends. LX 5.0's look better as far as the rear end goes IMO.
