Tailpipes under a Fox GT Bumper?

I was thinking of just dumping my GT pipes. Any reason to keep the tailpipes? Seems like it’s just added weight and taking up space back there. I’m still on my same tank of gas from October 2024 so you can get a feel for how much it gets driven.

Aftermarket Cobra bumper with 2.5" Flowmaster LX tailpipes

The Saleen bumper will install below the moulding, so cutting the rear cover (at least along the bottom) will likely be required. If you find a Saleen rear that doesn't install over an OEM bumper then the tape stripe moulding is a different size between LX and GT.

I am planning on experimenting with a damaged GT bumper cover from my son's GT we are putting together. A few years ago I played with a pic I found on the internet to visualize the concept...

My thought is to take 2.5-3" out of the middle of the bumper cover, plastic weld it back together and then modify the stock side skirts to connect/blend the lines. It will be a bunch of body work to finish it off and make it look right, but it will definitely be unique. Then I would use LX polished tip tailpipes. Kind of a Cobra bumper cover look but retain the MUSTANG GT scripting, might even fool a few people.

@95steedamustang has done the swap in one of his build threads. What I mean is, he either put the Cobra on a GT bumper or the GT on a Cobra bumpers.

Anywho... I looked but I don't recall what thread it was in or where. Eventually, he'll get the ping and maybe stumble in here. :D

The point was to keep it looking as much like a stock GT bumper as it could. The kickout at the bottom rear sticks out much more on the GT than the Cobra.

Besides, I have the GT bumper and not another Cobra bumper. If it can work right it might be an option for all those GT owners who want something different. Also the Gt bumpers are 3 piece, so easier to install and remove vs the one piece Cobra bumpers.

Aftermarket Cobra bumpers are usually held on with double sided tape on the sides (not the greatest). For my bumper I added (fibreglassed in) the factory side mount brackets to better secure it to the car. It was a bit trickier to install but it went on (not sure if it will come off someday easily though).
