What I would recomend for an 12-11 second Mustang II:

3.You will need some kind locking rear axle. I have an inexpensive stock car mini spool. So-far so-good. I have never had rear axle issues in a II. The engine and transmission tend to blow-up first when playing weakest link

Only thing I can figure is I'm the only one to have pulled the II housing and found a bananna'ed perch.

If you were looking to run faster then 11's or 12's I would change the rear-end to a race prepped 8.8 with c-clip eliminators and 31 spline axles.

I reciently read where C-Clip eliminators aren't suited for street use/ sustained driving.

Since I'm 'old school" I didn't commit the reason to memory.

Or you could put in a trusty 9" Ford but, they are old school and there added strength is tarnished by increased rotating mass and friction.

I find it hard to get over being able to have multiple chunks set up and waiting.

Maybe that will become less important when I get an OD Transmission.

I was depleteing the local supply of 8" trac locs before i built a 9" for the II.
Broke a carrier, broke a ring gear, snapped a couple axles. Maybe some of the aftermarket stuff is decent. Dont know, i swapped to a 9" before most of that stuff was available. Lots of folks will argue about it, but im no fan of the 8".

well, they leak horribly an gear old and breaks do not get along well

most of the guys 'round these parts are welding 9" ends on their 8.8s pressing a bearing and living the good life

What?

I found gear lube on drums gives super brakes. At least the first few times their used.

First time I saw an axle used as the inner race was while I was doing brakes in my land lords '72 (?) Firebird. This was in '82.

I wondered just what the hell the 'engineers' were thinking, The 'races' had light pitting and a ring or two. Being from the land of Ford I douldn't figure out what idiot would make it necessasary to replace the axles if hte bearing suffered catistrophic failure.

Then along comes the 8.8. Must be a bean counter thing.
