sbf head bolts thread into water jackets so using thread sealing compund is a must, thats where the leak issue at fault. sounds like they are inexperienced.

you get what you payfor when it comes to engines. if you cant build it yourself only buy from a proven engine company. check out probe industries they built great race motors.

Update: well BAR is doing a great job. They explained to me alot they haven't paid there property tax since 2007, not only that they don't even have a license from BAR which is required by law n ca. so it looks like they are in deep deep trouble.

anyways guys ill post back here later. I've already picked out two shops in my area that i am concidering bob @ gromm racing head service or AED in Sacramento, im also looking at Eastbaymusclecars.com.

I have had nothing but good luck from M&R engines now M&R motors in Glendale CA. Sounds to me like you might not have a mechanic doing the work if you will not let the shop talk to your mechanic. How is m&r suppose to help you if you can not let you "mechanic" talk to him and find out what is really going on. On another not i have had one of M&R's 347 stokers in my mustang for a couple years and never had a problem but i did upgrade to AFR heads well worth it. Procomp is a knock off company but they are advertised so you know that is what you are getting that is why i chose not to go with them. I just purchased one of M&R's modular 5.1 and put PI sohc heads onit and put it in my 99 gt. i absolutley love it. I do not know how much the gain is yet but i have beet one of my buidies cobras. I wish you luck with your cases but remeber you get what you pay for upgrade to better parts i know the low ends are sound but upgrade from the procomp heads to something better.

Great that you have a good running motor, but that doesn't give me conifidence in him and his company. after reading reviews from other customers no thanks..ill pass...Yes procomp is a knock off company, but for this guy to tell me he had 30+ years building motors shouldn't that tell the customer that this guy SHOULD know whats good and whats not? before he was prolly a good builder but now? i don't think so. to me and reading this review he is just trying to crook ppl out of their money especially when the agent told me he doesn't have a BAR license and he owes property tax since 07...sad... and he was hiding from the bar agent that's even worse and makes him look bad.

anyways glad that your motor is all good and puts out power that you want but that still doesn't give me confidence in him...

anyways the agent called me back, said he was fined and he will have a report on him. The owner asked that he wants to build me another motor..(unnnn i don't think so..) if it does lead to that i have demands in what i want. the agent even said that the owner was surprised with the information i had on him and problems with the motor, and he had nothing to show proof that he check the motor though he said it was fine.

sure i should have done more research before i went with him, but its a lesson learned.

I guess I'll never understand why anyone is willing to trust their hard earned dollars to any engine builder that they haven't thoroughly researched. And, No, eBay feedback doesn't count as research.

I've purchase 2 engines over the past 10 years. The first, a rebuilt 289, was from a very reliable local builder who provided me with many references and is known for his quality. Not to overlook the fact that I've never seen a machine shop as clean as his. (Kiwi Engineering in Old Saybrook, CT for anyone interested).

The 2nd, a remanufactured GM 454, was from JasperEngines.com. A very reliable company that's been in business over 50 years, maintains an A+ BBB rating, and has a very impressive warranty (with the resources to back it). I've had no issues with the engine, but if I did, I just take the vehicle back to the local Jasper authorized mechanic who installed it and they either fix the problem or replace the engine. The mechanic deals directly with Jasper and it wouldn't cost me a dime. There are Jasper authorized installers located throughout the U.S.

I'm sure I paid a hundreds more than the average no-reputation discount eBay builders. I'm also sure I've saved much more cash and aggravation in long run.

well yeah i agree feedback on ebay don't count, but i actually stumbled upon his website through Google, i spoke with them and they seem to know what they were talking about..until this incident. if you look at his site it looks clean and organized as well as his shop looked legitimate (pictures on his site) even the agent said the shop looked well organized when he visited...until he find out about the info on him. So yeah its hassle to go through this kind of thing, find a good reputable local shop that has experience in building Hp motors. im still going to fight this i found an actual shop that actually builds race/track/o/r/street motors called bob gromm racing head and service in San jose, ca. If i do get the money back i will most likely have bob gromm build my motor.

again i thank everyone who had the time to talk about their reviews/experience with this company and hope that others will not be like us and get ripped off with a junky motor.

It really sucks. You do need to do lots of research, and even then can still get a bad company. Here's one we're dealing with the BAR on. They were having problem with studs pulling out of the heads and they decided to pin them. I took the rockers off to look and found this. This was from the drill and tapping of the 2 stud bosses (while they were on the car. How they even expected to get them straight is beyond me.) And drilling and putting roll pin sin the studs to hold them in the heads. The milkshake is from the washing out the motor with water when they were done drilling.

Now of course I told her we needed to drop the pan. guess what. Bearings and crank are done. The place has already redone the engine once not including the first rebuild, and now they are blaming the problem on the oil filter company. You can't get too many recomendations. There are idiots everywhere.

Bob Gromm is the man, I lived in a neighborhood with 3 sprint car racers and what ever they couldn't do in their garages, they took to Bob's shop to have done. They had nothing but good things to say about him and his work.

I understand how upsetting it is to deal with a company when you have a problem the bar is in california to helpo people out with situations like yours but you half to look at it from another angle...I build cars for a living so i understand when i have problems with peoples cars i half to talk to who ever built the thing in the first place. i wish you luck and i know you dont want another engine from them but i know that there crate engines are good and it could have just been something simple. if procomp heads were so horrible they didnt work the company wouldn't be in business i dont support companys like procomp but it does make this hobby affordable for some people.

I hate to be that guy, but mustangkid87 has exactly 2 posts, both in this thread. Both claiming the opposite of everyone else.

Does anyone else smell a shill?

Another Angle?

There is no other angle. The truth is you never know how good a vendor is until you have a problem. So far all the guys on this thread that have problems with these guys end up losing unless laywers are called.

You would think so. But they are still in business for the same reason there is a mustang shop here locally still in business. They don't know and better. So people just see AL head for cheap, and buy them with the self convincing " I don't need to go that fast, just want something better." But I just saw another set of Pro comp heads with broken valves springs. Luckily it didn't drop the valve. That and the mark up is HUGE on those heads. So shops want to sell the hell out of them and make money without regards to whether the heads fail or not. It's not their fault right? Reliable honest shops don't sell junk, sorry.

Just finished reading this thread, threads on other boards about M&R, and thought the same thing.

Mustangkid:
Why order an engine if you can build it yourself? budget-minded? What? What about the cost of getting the cheap crap to work? It's not in my budget for a DSS block or FRPP block, so I'm just waiting. Guess it comes down to how much you like to research. I'm honestly suprised you chose to go with them, I can find almost nothing good about them.* (The good being - "my friend has their engine and it is great!")

Who are you mustangkid??? Nah, nevermind, I got an idea...
We need a sticky for places to avoid! In about a month, this thread might be buried. Sucks.

Who are you Mustangkid ?

Or should I say Chevykid ?

M&R engines AKA M&R motors and machining sell junk motors. Beware! - Truck Forums at Truckin' Magazine

Sooooo Matt. Care to explain ? How about this one ?

M&R engines in Glendale, CA??? - FFCobra.com - Factory Five Racing Discussion Forum

Funny how you tried to blame other mechanics for being rip offs because they explained to the customer how your stuff was FUBAR. We'll see if can't get this stickied. Hope the BAR hammers your ass. You make it hard for other honest shops to get work because companies like you burn people.

Oh, here's another.

Funny how you can't even act like your affiliated and show some spine to defend yourself. Rather than follow this guy around and pose as someone else. Idiot

This is just horrible, both in the people that got screwed, and that the guy is actually coming on and defending himself as a "satisfied customer"

If the admins would do an IP check so we can verify that the user account was in or around the area of the shop, it would be icing on the cake
