mach1/cobra motor swap into a GT......

Hey bro's,

It's been a while since i've been here..... I've since sold the mustang and picked up a crappy focus. I just bought a house with my fiancee so it had to be done. As soon as i get this damn focus paid off im going to begin my project car..... Gas mileage isn't a concern.....

I was considering picking up a GT with or without the motor and dropping in a mach1 or a cobra motor. Here are my issues:

1) I want either a supercharger or twin turbo's.....
2) 04 cobra motor is $4500 from ford (no blower)
3) 04 cobra motor is $12,000 from ford (with blower)
4) Mach 1 motor from ford is $4100

Does the (non blown) cobra motor come with an intake or would i have to buy that also.... there wasn't one shown in the picture.

Will the mach 1 motor hold up to 500+ hp?

would i be better off going with an 01-02 cobra motor?

I'm just trying to figure out the best route to go..... I want a car thats going to be fast off the line..... and fast on the highway! I figured it would be cheaper finding a used GT and swapping out the motor..... rather than building up a used cobra/mach 1. Insurance would be cheaper also :)

I'll be installing a high performance AOD transmission in the car also. If im not mistaken..... the motor should be able to bolt right in to the existing motor mounts correct? Most of the labor will be done myself..... however the tuning will not.....

Any help is appreciated!

i am about to to do that Swap right now in my GT. it is a 96 gt and i am putting in a 96 cobra motor. Though with regards to your question the non blower cobra is with out an intake but i would get a kenne bell instead of using the Eaton. cobra motor is alum. were as mach 1 is cast. Though for that kind of money though you will spend in ford racing you can buy a Short block from like VT for $5000 which is strocked and bigb bored. and then you can get a set of heads p&p for 2-3k depending on how good you want them. i will sell my 96gt with the sohc & dohc engines that i have for a decent price.

I would just buy a forged shortblock. vt, MMR, foxlake, mph, etc.

then run you head of choice, then you blower or turbo's of choice.

the older cobra motors/mach 1 platform are not bullitt proof in boosted format.

the mach 1 has high compression and should be held to about 6psi or so. the 99/01 is not completely forged. so there in lies the dilema. spend all that money for something breakable.

set a budget and a hp goal. I mean you can get to 500hp no proablem with stock 2v pi heads and the right blower. cheap too.

I think it sounds like a cool project. Sounds like he wants to keep spending at a minimum (dont blame you projects suck the money out of you been doin a jeep for a while) it really just depends on the car you find and the amount of work you can do i mean a gt without an engine seems like it would be pretty cheap. Not sure though just my .02

I originally just wanted to drop the 04 cobra motor (with the blower) into a gt since it should be faily easy..... then do minor mods like a smaller pulley.... exhaust.... etc and get to low 12's - high 11's.

Then i found out the cobra motor with the blower costs 12k..... so im thinking maybe the 04 cobra motor with out the blower for $4500 and just buy a kenne belle roots style blower for it?

I'd like to keep the cost as low as possible without having a 1/2 finished project..... After i get the engine/comp/cobra fuel tank in.... i'll do the transmission..... then some suspension work.

The 04 cobra motor will work with an automatic tranny correct? I don't see a reason why an engine wouldn't..... so please enlighten me if i am wrong.....

anymore thoughts/comments are appreciated

yeah right

dont waste your time trying to piece together a car. just suck it up and buy an 03 04 cobra if you want something that will handle a lot of power in stock form
Not everyone has 27K to just drop not to mention the insurance on one. Be realistic, I'm considering the same swap so ive been reading alot of related threads and it always gets me how many people say that. As long as your willing to put in the work and deal with the frustration do the project that you wanna do.
