He was pulling on me pretty hard. Would gears get me closer to him. He has an auto and he "says" the motor is stock, but that thing was really fast. I made a video but my friend dosent know how to keep the camera on the road. Plus Id get bitched at.

But do you think gears will allow me to keep up with him? Maybe throw some NO2 in the mix?

Since you were at the "track" when you raced....................................
the 94 LT1 that whipped me had 3:73's and after market rockers and CAI.....it took the H/C/I and supporting mods to get him.........I have him by a second now but he is making some upgrades over the winter..............

ls1's are fast. even the auto's...gm knows how to make a decent auto(i hate to say that) Gears wont help you....his massive 350cu and great flowing stock heads. etc puts a hurt on a poor stock 5.0.

Nitrous, boost, or a good h/c/i are your only reprieve.

On my local "track" ;) 1st and 2nd are pretty even because it's hard to get a good launch here. After that, I had him by about 3 lengths.

It'll take at least H/C/I or boost to run with stockish LS1's.

LT1 - good engine by Chevy. easy to mod. (even easy to tune the ECU).

LS1 - even better engine by Chevy. Good design & lightweight (aluminum block). Not an easy car to pull on.

Too bad (for Chevy) the build quality of the LT1 and LS1 F bodies was poor.

You basically need a built motor or boost to keep up with them, we have so many disadvantages under them. Stock for stock they weight about 150-200lbs less, they have as much power as a decent H/C/I (302) mustang and have torque-arm/panhard bar rearend system so they have much better traction. I could be wrong on this, but I think they have a 3.42 rearend(?). Find an LS1 with a cam and some bolt-ons and you'll need to be running a 331 or 347 stroker, sticky tires, better gearing and good driving. It's just tough going against something that will push 400rwhp N/A.

haha i hate it so much!!! i got a buddy who always make coments to me that chevys are better and that his vette could whip my mustangs and im like hello your got a 350 i got a 302....there a major diff right there im like go get a 305 camaro and you can talk crap if you want....hes not even in the same class as me...im not gonna go buy a viper and run my mouth to him ....i guess i just dont get it.

Just to clarify, the LSx engines are 346ci.

Also, to give you an idea of how the modded ones run, there's a guy around here that installed Patroit Performance stage II LS6 heads, LS6 intake, and comp cam 228/234dur 588/598lift, with exhaust and other supporting mods. He put down 405hp to the wheels on a mustang dyno, and he's run a best of 11.71@119 so far.

Here's my question to you all...Is it the short block that is so killer on those cars? Or is it the stock heads? What is it that makes them so advanced? Ignition system?

A block is just a block right?? There's nothing special you can do to a short block to make a car faster other than cubic inches. That leaves the heads intake cam and ignition.

How come they have 40 CI more and get close to 100more rwhp?

I remember seeing something about LS engines utilizing very high volumetric efficiency...like
when the intake valve closes, the air pushes back to the intake, and bounces back down to the valve, and at that precise moment the valve is opened.
I'm probably just making all of this up though. :D

My friend has a '99 Camaro SS, the only mods are headers and an slp lid, and it is almost as fast as my dad's freind's c5 Vette, i've driven both. It'd not even in the same league as a mildly modded 302. Don't forget that the f-body LS1 is basically the same engine that the standard (non z06) corvette c5 had...minus the true dual exhaust and better air intake.

close, what you are talking about is called wave pulse tuning--not VE although wave pulse tuning has a direct effect on VE.

having said that the LS1 operates on a 2nd pulse where as our beloved 5.0 operates on a 3rd pulse.

the heads on LS1's are superfantistico. great flow, velocity, really low burn time, etc...

as for saying a block is just a block, there is alot you can do to a block to make more power. for instance the diff between an LS1 block and an LS6 block is very slight(mostly revised ventilation passages) and is reported to make as much as a 15hp diff---thats the same crank, rods, pistons, heads, cam, etc, only diff is block.

That makes sense - although I don't exactly understand al you said.. Gotta admit, sounds like you know your stuff man.

Stock......down to the tires with stock air filter and 700 miles on the od. I ran a 13.2 @ 106 with my 99 Z28 (orange)

Same track similar conditions my 95 GT ran 13.1 @ 105 with full H/C/I

The LS style motors pull HARD up top. They revised the cams in 00 or 01 to give them a little more tq under the curve. Slightly soft off the line, a set of 4.10's fixes that though.

a stock or few bolt on LS1 -VS- a HCI 5.0 is a drivers race in the 1/4. The 5.0 will almost always be on top in the 1/8th. After that on comes the 3rd gear pull in the LS1.
