Yes .... they're a glass/metal mix (layered) ..... because there was a recall on them for splitting apart at higher speeds.

i almost wish that would happen...then i could say my car is so fast it shattered the hood:D

oh wait its not a new vette so my body panels cant fall off:eek:

The LS1 and LT1 f-bodies are fast cars. You cannot argue that. The only ****ty thing is that the 4L60E will not hold up to roll racing. The bands do NOT like it and you'll trash autos in 20k miles from roll racing.

Speaking of weight reduction, I remember my front quarter panels were urethane in my Z...factory. I wonder how much urethane or fiberglass panels would lighten our cars?

The fenders themselves aren't terribly heavy. you might save ~15 pounds if you replaced all front and rear...this is just a guess from when I had to replace mine though...it could possibly be more. It seems to me the doors and roof are the heaviest part of our body...hard to say what could be done there though, you don't want to mess with the structural integrity of the car

theres not much we can do to lighten our bodys. the fenders weigh less than 10lbs each. the quarter panels are welded on, so i dont see what could be done there. i guess someone could make carbon fiber doors (BUT PAINT THEM). i dont know if it would shave any significant amount of wieght though.

lol no one ever said anything about fbodies being light cars

Lots of good points here. Thanks for the FYI on the weight. I almost forgot..I seem to remember my Z ALSO having fiberglass DOORS! I am almost sure of it. lt1 aluminum heads, fg doors, urethane front quarters, LS1 ADD aluminum block..right? probably light k-members..once again, Chevy steps up on the weight as well as the engine..starting to make sense as to why those cars rock.

As to the 460le MisterCMK is nail on head :hail2: Mine didn't last but 50k and cablam! They don't hold up.

might not be easy, but it should take some weight off.

Yeah. My hood is fiberglass. How I know - I had an accident and it definitely was not metal. But it's probably just as heavy as a metal hood though. Now I have the Cobra R hood and it's probably 3-4 times lighter than the stock hood.
