I'm doing VT Stage 2 N/A cams as soon as they come in stock and of course this means I have to change my springs. I was going to purchase the Comp Cams 2v springs but I just noticed VT has the Manley Nextek springs in their online store and I had forgot all about those. The Manley springs are $50 more. I don't mind paying the extra money at all as long as it's not wasted. What do you guys think? My car is probably going to be N/A for sometime and I might eventually get new heads but that's probably going to be a long time aways.. like a year if it even happens. Think the Manley springs are going to be worth the extra money? or should I just stick to the Comp Springs?

I would stick with the Comps. I think the Manley's are for Cams with higher lift. You really dont need them if you arent going more than a .550 lift.

the comps will not work for you. those only are for up to 550 lift. the stage 2 n/a are 560/575 lift cam.

crowler springs thsoe are good up to a .660 lift but are more money. the manleys they have will work but you are near the edge of what they can handle for lift.

I got the crower high lift springs w/ titanium retainers. I had a spring that broke last year, took out my engine (I honestly believe it was installer error but I can't prove it) and Crower said they never had a problem as I had described (driving 25 MPH after pulling out of a parking lot, boom spring breaks). I went with them again, and thus far have had no problems running a cam with .612 lift.

see the VT Stage 2 N/A cams have a .560/.575 lift, but a TON of people have told me the Comp Cams springs still work even though they say up to .550 lift. So I'm confused

Tough decision.. I was honestly gonna go with Comp springs until I read this info.. But i dunno, since they come pre-loaded in the MPH Stage 2.5 heads, I'd think they'd be good enough.. But i'm no genius

I found this on MD!

"Comps rates the springs at .550 lift because of the spring pressure, not max lift. If you compute the comp's installed height and coilbind to find lift at coilbind, it's .668", way more than .550" "

So Comp will work but will Manley add extra protection or let me shift at 6500 without worrying about any problems?

interesting. then the spec comp gives with that product is worthless.

maybe comp feels the spring is prone to failure at higher than .550 lift a increased failure rate at higher lifts would explain why comp would put max lift at such a low number. Maybe they feel that the the spring could be prone to failure if used in a very aggresive race cam with very sharp lobe angles. the more sudden the opening and closing events are the more stess on the valve spring.

what else makes any sense? Why would'nt comp put the .660 number out there for max lift. it has to be because they don't feel the spring is capible of it with certain cams that can reach that lift.

there are many factors that can effect the reliability of a vavle spring. in a agressive cam you will see much higher valve speeds than with the stock cam. so not only do you have to consider max lift, but you have to take into account how violent the opening and closing of the valves are with the cam you will use.

the best bet is to talk to VT, they are the designer of that cam and should be able to tell you what springs to use.

I agree w/ Mike, there is so much mis-information, or incorrectly documented things both online and on retailer's websites - your best bet is to call the cam manufactuerer/designer and see what they call for specifically. In my case, I have no choice but to go with the Crower springs, as they are the only ones that can handle the high lift of my cam. The Nextek's were another choice, but didn't offer as high a lift as what I needed. VT is very friendly, give em a call.

if VT recomended the comps then go with them. VT must feel that the spring speed will stay reasonable and the valve events are not violent enought to need a stronger spring.

VT sells this cam, they probally designed it so they should know. and plus now that i think of it. many people have the comps in cars with vt stage 2's

Actually one of the VT guys told me that the Comp Springs will work fine with the VT Stage 2's.. but they also said Crower or Manley spring's will be just a little bit stronger than the Comp. So even though the Comp Springs will work I am going to go ahead and go with the Manley Nextek springs just for peace of mind. Thanks guys!
