Manual Shifting an Auto question

I had a guy tell me that manual shifting an Auto will blow the tranny up. Is this true? I have never heard of this. The same guy, who BTW was driving a black Mach 1  also told me he gained 50 rwhp buy running straight pipes from the cats back. I call :bs: on that. Anyone else have an opinion on it?

Thanks for you help on the shifting question.

Upshifting the trans manually will not hurt the trans. Don't manually downshift though. Your computer will shift better than you can think to, so leave it in drive and you'll more than likely drive faster. I shift it manually, because I have to moderate the throttle to get traction. If I leave it in drive and lose traction, my run is over because as soon as I lift, the trans goes to second (not too good for times).

there was some post in talk about some guy that downshifts his auto all the time. i didnt believe it and said i woudlnt do it, but apparently plenty of people agreed with him.

:OT: what about a manual valve body. i never really completely under stood these. it just gives u the ability to upshift AND downshift your auto and still be able to put it in Drive. i was reading about 1 that like you put it in 1 and then it snaps back down and then u ave to push it back up for 2. maybe its the Hammer shifter or something i dunno? ill ask jimfitzgerald *he has 1* when im in the market for 1.

I'm pretty sure that's the Hammer shifter. I got mine yesterday and was playing around with it. It seems to work the way you described. I'll know more tomorrow when I put it in.

Well I manually shift mine too. I actually run about .1 faster when I do. When I do it with my radials on it usually barks 2nd. I thought it was :bs: too. Just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the replies. :nice:

Sorry but a manual valve body wont let you put it in D and go. Its fully manual, hence the name, and you have to shift/downshift it. One of the reasons why I dont really plan on getting one. I usually shift it manually when I want to bark second :D Also, I downshift my auto at times. I know its not good for it but it does stop you quicker. I dont think itll seriously hurt the tranny though if you know when to lower gears.
