mass air questions....

Ok well i have got some gifts for my birthday early this year, anyhow one being a al9 computer and mass air stuff, now i have a 88 gt, i have read about 5 different threads and am getting totally lost as what way is the correct way, one thread states that you don't need the vss hooked up, (my car dosn't have crusise) one says it does, can anyone point me in the right direction, i really don't want to fry a computer, or have it run badly.

Has anyhone ever hooked up a mass air setup without the vss ect.. and have had no problems? i was told it was easy to do, but i guess that is if you know what exacltly is the right way. thanks for any input.

In short, you can hook up the mass air unit without the VSS and "it'll work". But, it would not be smart or safe to run it like that for any length of time.



Do you have an auto or manual? Regardless, with an a9l, you want/need the VSS. The VSS input is used by the EEC to keep the engine RPMs up while you slow down to a stop, without having the engine die from the load, when you have manual tranny. Also, the same is true when starting off from a complete stop.

So..., if you have an auto, you might be able to get away without a VSS. Or, if you have a manual, as long as you always put in the clutch while slowing down and ease up on the clutch while starting, you "might" get by without a VSS. But, IMHO, regardless of how well you drive a manual, without an VSS input into the EEC, it's still likely that the engine WILL die sometimes when you're slowing down or starting.

Now, consider how much that would suck and how dangerous it would be in some situations (like a merge onto a busy street) to have the engine die.

sorry for not mentioning it is a standard, do all mustang 5 speeds have a vss sensor, this is a 88 gt, and it dosn't have cruise control. so would it still have a vss on the transmission. the damn car is so low i cannot see under it and it's -12 degres celcius, i froze my arse off today putting in a steeda tri ax. anyhow thanks for helping.

From what I remember, SD cars only have a VSS if they have cruise. All MAF cars have a VSS.
My car ('86) has cruise. So, it came with a VSS from the factory.

Yea, installing a VSS in the cold, outside, in the winter, would suck. IMHO, if you don't have a garage, I'd leave the MAF install for better weather. You definitely don't want your car stalling at intersections in the winter. Great way to have someone skid/slam into you with the slick/icy roads.

my car is in my garage, it's a summer only car, but i need a better heating solution that the one i have lol, as for cruise were would the controls be located? if they were on the steering wheel it has been replaced with a aftermarked grant. if thats the case i guess i gotta get the car up in the air and look for a vss on the trans, can anyone tell me were to look on the trans. it's a stock T5. thanks again. just want to be fully prepared before doing this project.

The VSS is mounted on the speedo cable where it enters the trans. You can check the throttle cable mounting bracket for the cruise linkage. If there is only one cable attached to the throttle then you do not have cruise or it was removed. not sure where the cruise equipment is.....in drivers fender I think? The thing is even without cruise you would still need some way to tell the EEC that the car is moving so I'd think there would still be a VSS there.

ok thanks for the info, i will go look under the hood tommorow and see what i come up with. hopefully it used to have cruise, as 88 didn't need vss sensor for the SD compuer, only 89 and up. that much i was able to find out. but if mine did have cruise there should be 2 linkage on my throtle body, i will check.
