Hopefully there is a member thats from massachusetts that knows of our *****ty inspection process in this taxfully abundant state. Cutting to the chase....i have an O/R H that would "Visually" pass (welded on Cat casings around the pipe), but will be mincemeat if it hits the rollers. I have the MIL Eliminators keeping the check engine light off...and i used the scan too to check for codes (none found), and to clear the codes...just in case there are some hiding that i can't see. I have heard that on OBDII cars they just plug a scan tool (glorified scan tool) into the port and check for codes. If none appear, you pass the test. If this is the case i am golden...everything else on the car is legit and professional. Any MA residents with words of wisdom?

I failed the Visual, lol. They test the actual emissions only every other year.since your car is a 1998 they only test it on the even years. the bad news its 2004 so its your year, I have heard of older 5.0's passing without cats. but the emissions are way more strict for the newer cars. I brought my car in to have it tested and failed because they did a visual. I bolted my stock h-pipe back up and passed. U get 60 days if u fail, your best bet it to try to pass with your pipes and if u fail bolt on a stock pipe. they also test your car if it was just bought either new or from someone else. so that sort of sucks to. I don't know what to tell you man, good luck. I hate massachuestts.

New Jersey laws are pretty strict too. My old mustang (RIP) had an off road x pipe and there was no way they would let me go through inspection and pass with that thing. But I tried anyway. The guy testing the car just looked at me like, 'are you an idiot?' I failed of course so I went home and bolted the stoke H pipe back into place and passed with flying colors. Actually, not flying colors but passing nonetheless. On a side note and a little off topic I had to take my dads acura TL down for inspection. In terms of emissions, the guy said that the car "couldnt kill a chipmunk in a shoebox" where as the mustang could "probably kill an elephant". Just a funny little quote the guy said that made me chuckle. But I would say just save yourself the hassle and put the stock pipe back in place for the day. You will probably have to do it anyway and it will save you the hassle of scraping all the goo off your windshield from the rejected sticker, PITA.

not sure if this will help you but we sort of had the same discussion on our local forum http://boston-motorsports.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=451
Hey man....thanks for the link....i'm still unsure...seems like mixed reviews on the process. There was one kid that says he's a licensed inspector, but he doesn't seem to have all the information straight.....ugh....hasn't anyone the right answer? I wouldn't care about getting a rejection sticker (good for 60 days for emissions failure), but then i'll get pulled over all the time for it cuz of suspicious cops, and when i get it reinspected they will go over it with a fine-tooth comb, possibly finding more things they are no satisfied with. Even the Enhanced Emmisions website says in one paragraph that that if i pass the OBDII test and safety i am all set; next paragraph talks about dynoing the car....Anyone been through this? Anyone know of someone that will omit the dyno for me (for the right price, of course)? Thanks for the input guys.

In MA they don't dyno your car every year. Its every other year or when you first buy it. No one will not dyno the car unless its AWD, but they can run another car in your place that will pass if you know yours won't and then put the sticker on your car. Also for window tint I just roll my windows down and they don't check, depending on where you go you may have the same luck. There will be a visual safety check each year and emissions every other year, provided you keep it registerd/insured all year. If you don't then each year you reinsure it you will have to have emissions done again. At least in MA we can tint our door glass, N.J. can't even do that.

MA is getting harder and harder to find inspection stations that will "help" you out. It's been a few years now since the stricter standards have been in place and many stations have been caught cheating and got fined up the waazooo.

I basically need to put all my smog equipment back on when it's my time on the rollers. It's a pain in the butt but gotta do what ya gotta do. The station i go to doesn't give me the visual, but it just needs to pass the sniffer. That's about the biggest hook-up i can find these days.

I'm trying to find if Mass has any sort of collector plates or some sort of emmissions exempt program. Best i can find is antique plates at 25 years old. I plan on buying a 03/04 Mustang soon so the 5.0 will be a toy and i don't want to keep going through this pipe-swapping BS all the time on a car i want to basically put a fog-pumping motor into

Yup, does have a ram air hood on it. That's Dave "Ruzman"'s 2000GT and the pics were taken at some pond out near Winchester i beleive.

Drop me a hint to where we met up. I do recognize your car, but i can't put car with place and time and location if you know what i mean. I've just met so many local stang owners off here i forget sometimes.

I didn't even notice your location said Revere til you just posted this

I met you (or whoever owns the gold GT) on revere beach either last summer or the summer before....let me see if i can find a pic of my car for you. I friends are all in Clean Machines Auto Club if you've heard of us. Used to be down Dunks next to the Marsh on Squire road all the time...with a white twin turbo camaro. Ring a bell?

Ah, ok i'm starting to remember now. Shoot me a picture though cuz i'm still hazy. I knew a few people in the CMAC but this was a while ago. I've lost touch with a few of em. The "Mustang Thing" kinda died down a lot around Revere as the "Import thing" took over, especially down Revere beach. A lot of my friends no longer own them so i usually cruise with people i meet off here
