Well, I am going to have the strangest inventory of cars. I have decided to get a TT Supra. Bang for buck...extremely competitive. Horsepower...wicked 900rwhp
I Been looking around a lot and the prices are reasonable, HP is crazy...and best of all will still have my Stang. The power and look of the Supra's is unbelievable and the prices I have seen, a sub-10 second car will not be unreachable with my budget.
I am not, and will not get rid of the Stang. One thing I am afraid of is the reliability of a Supra. But most research to date indicates an excellent reliablity rating for a sports supercar, and good gas mileagle to boot.
Is this considered a "going to the dark side" moment?

you can have a very reliable supra and they do make great HP unlike our mustang motor a stock supra motor can handle crazy boost! do the single turbo upgrade!

What trips me out the most is that for 30g's I can grab a 7-900rwhp Supra. At least that is what my research on a budget race car is telling me. I want to some day run a sub10 car. A Supra will do it and it will be street legal to boot. I guess I am hooked on speed but don't have the money to get my or any other stang to that high of HP, with reliability hangin' in the balance.
Any other supercar with that high of hp will cost in the upper 90-100k range. Why are the Supra's so comparitively cheap? More research is due...

Supra is one of the few cars you can brag about not only on here but any Mustang forum and not get flamed. They eff'n rock the block...literally.

you can put 30k into your stang and it would be just as fast if not faster and reliable....guy on the mach1 forums has a 1000rwhp mach thats completely reliable....supras are pretty bad at getting traction (usually)

yeah umm, whats a 300hp and a 1000hp supra have in common? 12 seconds. They suck at launching unless you have them specifically set up to do so, and then they would be horrible at everything else but the 1/4.

If you do get a supra and do plan on making 500+hp, it WILL only be useful on the freeway, 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be useless.

you want to know the best bang for your buck car to get into 10's? 90-94 Eclipse/Talon/Laser. AWD utilizing the 4g63, probably one of the greatest 4cyl motors ever concieved by man. In a DSM, its capible of 500rwhp UNTOUCHED, 600 when you upgrade the head studs and gasket (the stock studs will allow the head to lift past 25-28psi) and the right tuning. you can get a running good condition 1g (90-94 dsm) for 1-2k and throw another 5-9k into mods (60trim turbo, fuel system, fmic, DSMlink to tune, 2.4L Stroker, Shep Tranny) and it WILL run 10's. Reliable, no, but guess what, a 900hp Supra wont be either, no matter what the supra fansite says. Many DSM guys have Supras as well, and drive their dsm's more cause the supra is down. just cause the motor alone can take the abuse, doesnt mean the rest of the car can.

btw whats your "Budget" anyways? i dont know what your smoking, but modding a supra to the 900hp level is NOT cheap, ask Hogan, he has a few. youre looking at 20k+ for mods alone, before taking into consideration dyno time, installation time if you have a shop do it, and before the price of the car (10-15k). I dont think id call thats much bang for the buck. you can have a TT Terminator for less.

Unless you want a supra cause all the hot asian chicks flock to them at HIN..........

I am a former Supra owner, and I want to make it clear that the car is no super car. Don't even try to put it in that category. Another thing, your paying 30 grand for a used and likely abused car. Fast and the Furious ruined the care of these cars. Unless you owned it from the get go, there is no telling who did what with the car. You can bolt on a big azz turbo or some twins and tune, beat the snot out of that car for 5 years and then return it to stock and no one would be the wiser. The good news - that bottom end can handle it. The bad news, the suspension and trans take a serious beating. If your making a race car out of it, this doesn't matter, but if you are staying in a budget it definately does matter.

Fully expect to spend no less than 4K in getting the chassis dialed in for traction, but you still won't get great traction. The car is an animal properly boosted and tuned and I'll forever be a fan of these cars.

Head work for flow will break the bank too.

Mine was full on drag for 2 years, 10.17 et's on conservative tunes, would have cut easy 9 second passes pushing her, but I got the wise idea to convert to show car, and then last year sold her. Man I miss this car.

My main point is, don't think your just gonna pop sub tens without the normal headaches of spending lots of money, you will sink a ton of dough into building the Supra. Drivetrain beyond the motor is an issue, and no one accounts for what those parts cost when you make the proper upgrades for power handling. Getting the Chassis dialed in is a whole other issue.

Some of the top teams are are running sub 7 sec 1/4's. Not to shabby for a 6 banger.

I am considering buying a new one. I believe 2009 is the year they will be reintroduced. I would never spend 30k on a used Supra. I spent 11K on a 3000GT VR-4 with only 38K miles. That's one of the most underrated cars around. Dynamic racing is doing some sick stuff with those cars. That was a fun car until I got over aggressive with the suspension and went with the tein coilovers. Can you say harsh ride? Car sold, lesson learned.

Well I appreciate all the input from everyone. It is such a hard decision. I want to find one with low miles that has been kept up. I know pretty much any car I choose will have a history of being beat on. But hopefully I will make the right decision.

As far as price goes, I hope to get one that has mods done already, but I want to stay cautious enough to not buy someone elses problems. Just like any car, the more you mod it the more you are throwing money away because you won't get much on the return sale. I will post my progress once I get one. My instinct is to just go get one....But I prefer to be patient and wait for the right deal.

Get in that engine bay and do compression test, an absolute must. Start there and then work your way around to everything else. Bad results on that compression test, walk away. Test all cylinders, not just one or two.

+1 I completely agree on the 3000GT, I don't know if they have a super bottom end like the supra, but they are pretty quick out of the box, and you can find them very cheap. I don't think they look too shabby either.

I just read in motor trend or one of those mags that the new performance car from Supra may not be a Supra at all. It is the FT-HS concept.

Well, I don't hate Supra's, but generally that is what most of them are, and you see why, look at the prices.

90 - your right, the car is not cheap to build overall when looking for the 10's. Performance parts are no different for a supra than they are for a mustang, often times they are priced slightly higher for the imports.

I think blackonblack06 is talking about out of the box performance. Which I totally agree with and know first hand. The Supra is a bad boy in stock form and with little money can be deadly as a street car.

Sub ten second passes won't come cheap. Like any other aftermarket following though, you can stay in your low cost category on a majority of the parts list via group buys, sales and what not. The good news is the thing can go well into the tens reliably on the stock block.

I personally would build a terminator instead. Probably because I did the supra thing..

Toyota's and Honda's are the most reliable cars. The only reason for doubts would be the fact that's probably 10 or more years old vehicle since they stopped making them a while ago.

I don't care what make or model a car is, when you start making real power, especially when you start hooking it, things are going to break. If you just want a fast/fun car, you can do it for less, but if you want to roll with the big dogs, it's going to cost you a lot more. It is true you can make some cars pretty fast without really getting your hands dirty, that is why some types of cars attract some types of guys.
