Are you serious, I doubt white's will become a minority, you really think we're going to get enough immagrants to change the white's to be the minority? this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

i dont know if you have ever been to florida, new york, so cal, texas, or even southeast michigan, but if you have you may respect the point that ONE day in the future it is possible that the level could actually equal out between immigrants and americans.. if the goverment doesnt do anything..there are TONS of immigrants there..and they always seem to have like 10 kids

Dude, the ambassador of the Taliban just got a student visa and is currently studying at Yale. He had substandard scholastic scores but because of the Student Visa Lottery, and his ethnicity, his application was expedited.

This is a guy that was the international mouth piece for a regime that the United States overthrew. He advocated the killing of homosexuals, terrorist tactics, and chopping off of fingers for women that wore fingernail polish.

But on affirmative action, i think it should be setup for classes....not races. If a minority goes to a "rich white" school with all the bells and whistles, i dont think they need the "extra help" from affirmative action. Thats why i feel ANY kid that goes to a school that is in a bad area, should get the help. It doesnt make sense to have a black kid and white kid who live in the ghetto, yet are trying to get out, have the same grades, same activities, parents make the same money which isnt much at all, both go to the same piece of crap school and the black kid gets "help" and the white kid doesnt? If there is gonne be help given out...base it on class not on race. Although...most racial lines follow class lines. But there are exceptions to that.

That is B/S! its not my prob. that the average scores for minorities is lower then whites for instance. I don't know i mean you should look at ppl the same but diff races come from diff. cultures and are just diff. Such as physically we are exactly the same in about every way except pigment color. But mentally the beliefs are quite a bit diff. I still disagree with whites becoming the minority in america but that is my thought. Maybe all of them will come to America and i can move to Cancun. ya thats funny you say that because that is the exact subject we had a discussion on back in high school. i can agree with that, but it just pisses me off when my cousin and a guy from high school didnt get in b/c basically they were white. my cousin had a 3.7 gpa 32 on the ACT's. the guy had a 3.8, 33 on the ACT's. both members of NHS and all that. then my good friend who is asian had like a 3.3 and cant remember what on the act's (maybe 26) and he got in..that is total

No its not. As a middle class white guy, with 55K in college loans to pay back, its not ignorant at all.

Tell that to my Fraternity brother who is black and GOT PAID 6000 dollars a year to go to engineering college. He bought a brand new 2004 Harley Davidson F150 his Junior year. By the way, his dad has 6 classic muscle cars in a heated garage independent from his house, which is about 3 times the size of mine. Hey, if I was in his shoes though, I'd do the same thing!

Financial aid should be based on merit. You want it, you work for it, you earn it. Bring your grades, bring your SATs, bring your ACTs, bring your AP scores. Being a minority or poor does not make you more deserving then the rich or the majority.

Well the whole reason i think the "aide" is given to minorities is because of the past and how whites held minorities back. So who is to say when that it is even again? Will it ever be? I wonder how things would be if whites didnt do what they did in the past. I wonder how it would be if everyone was treated fairly with the same opportunities. That would be interesting. And yes, minorities can succeed. They do succeed. But for the average minority coming from a poor neighborhood, it is harder. Just like its harder for a white coming from the same neighborhood. But sometimes, not as hard.

But thats why i say look at the class...not the color of the person. To me it should be based off where u grow up at. U of M has a lot of arguing going on with the topic. Blacks do get "points" for their application. But so do people who are from the upper peninsula. And i wonder what the percentages are of whites/minorities of those students. All the ones i have met are white.

It IS ignorant to say that just because you are "white". And IMO its ignorant to say "HEY IM BLACK, GIVE ME HELP!" also. It goes both ways. Yea, some may not like how the system works right now, but guess what, the system has been screwed up for a longgggg time. It goes both ways. Both sides of the fence can complain about just as many things.


Thats why i went on to say its classes that matter. Forget your skin, where did u go to school? 1 parent home? Income? etc etc etc. These are the kind of things that i believe make the difference between students. Obviously your black friend didnt come from a under priveledged(sp) home. Therefore, he shouldnt be getting all that aide.

And im sorry, we'll agree to disagree, but being a minority(and guess whos in most poor areas) DOES make u more deserving. Why? Cause the rich white,black, asian whatever kids have more resources then you. They have better schools. Better "homes" to go home to. Better teachers. MORE chances to succeed. Where as in poor neighborhoods, there is non of that. A student coming from a poor neighborhood has the odds stacked against him. The playing field isnt level to being with. Just my opinion.


EDIT: when i say whites, i mean in general and mainly historically just so no one takes offense. Im mixed, half white/half black so i can see on both sides of the fence.

it's funny how that is totally turned around here at UCI, being a predominantly asian school, basically ANY other race will get in no matter what gpa/ap/sat scores.

I know a few smart asian people who didn't get in, while my bro (worse grades - but very good nonetheless 4.2+ decent sat) did... and we're "white"

XC - First, you need to get the hell out of Nebraska and into the "real world." Nebraska is so far from the real world that it would make your head spin. Majority and minority status doesn't amount to a hill of **** until you actually surround yourself with the minority (blacks, spanish, etc.). I can say I didn't see too many "minorities" when I was out at the University of Nebraska and I believe the demographics of Nebraska would show that.

Secondly, who gives a rats ass what you are? If you haven't figured things out, I'll break it down a little.

Success in life is dependent upon your drive and your education. Educate yourself properly and you won't have anything to worry about, again, regardless of racial status.

I dont know many college educated people who have a "hard time" getting through life....

I agree with you Joe but being realistic its not always that easy. In your shoes yes. In mine yes again. But the fact is that kids in poor neighborhoods have it harder than kids in rich neighborhoods. Its 2 totally different worlds that are not equal. And the other thing is this...once whoever gets into school, the kids from the poor neighborhoods will be working to LIVE. Not to have money to blow on the weekend, to pay for schooling, to pay for rent, to pay for books. On top of their school schedule which takes up a ton of time depending on the school and area of study. Kids in rich neighborhoods dont have this kind of stress. And yes i know there are exceptions, but this is my "general" view from my experiences here at U of M.

We would all love it to be fair and equal so we could say its all up to you, but truth be told, there are A LOT of other factors involved. But still though, in my eyes being poor, being black, being white, being whatever is not an excuse not to succeed. Maybe a few extra steps have to be taken, but the point is that they can be taken and you have no excuse not to get it done.

Yea but this is where my advantage comes in from being bi-racial. You gotta look at both sides of that fence. Not just the one u are standing on. well i guess if you want to look past skin color then you should hold minorities to their level with the majority. If the minority can produce the same or better then the majority then hey its fine that he/she gets into that college but when you have the minority down by a half to full point on a 4.0 GPA Scale and 3-5 points on the ACT and 100-300 points less on the SAT and yet still get in over the majority that is WRONG!!! You can't argue with that! So you should never have to put down what race you are and they should just stop ranking the percentage because in the end their will only be one race due to all the inter-racial relationships in the world. They were piled on the floor like a hurricane came through.

The conquistadors released "Mexicans" almost 100 years ago? All they did with their country is run it into the ground and fill their cities with crime and corruption. They see our country as the holy land, a place they can find work and make a living, boo hoo. In the end all that crime and corruption they created in their homeland is being brought over here, maybe you could call it a plague? All these people who are all butt hurt about making minorites feel equal and giving them a chance aren't going to appreciate it when they are surrounded by them, i guarentee it. Hell, the mexican military assists people in smuggling drugs over here and Bush doesnt give two ****s. The Cartel has bounties on the heads of governers in border cities that are trying to shut down the drug trafficing. And let me guess its the minorities that are rotting the country? What is so different between what whites did years ago and what minorities do today? Who owns the ports that bring drugs in? Who owns the boats? Who has all the money that makes the drug deals go down? I sure hope you're putting as much blame on whites as u are on minorities. So what is the fix then? Mind sharing it? How do u plan on fixing years of setbacks? The system is in no way perfect. It has PLENTY of flaws and works against itself sometimes. Improvements can be made. But i get the feeling that u feel like the white male is just an innocent victim. While he himself probably his, he has to pay for the history of his own race. Just like Blacks do every single day of their life. (a little generalizing goin on there)
