I couldnt help but bring this up. The new MM&FF has an article about the BBK SSI vs. Ported Cobra intake. Two things:

One, on the baseline pull with the Cobra intake, they used a 65mm throtle body. It was already on the car. When they went to the BBK piece, they put on a new BBK 70mm t.b., which the author wrote, "There would be no difference in horsepower between the two".

Two, at the end of the story, they said, " While we were under the hood, we changed the oil (to synthetic) and oil filter", a K&N piece.

So, the results were 295 lbft. and 256 hp at the wheels for the ported Cobra. The BBK and 70mm t.b made 300 lbft. and 268 hp.

For consistency's sake why not put on the 65mm t.b. for the BBK intake, and they never said at which part "under the hood" did they change the oil to synthetic. Before the Cobra swap? After?

Que the X-Files music. With a peak gain of 12 hp and 5 ftlb. I believe they needed the bigger t.b. and synthetic oil to make the story worth writing. If it were almost even at peak numbers, it would'nt be a "sexy" story to put out.

Im a cop, Im naturally suspicious anyway, but I just wanted to bring this up for discussion. Im sure the BBK intake is better than stock, and I may buy it anyway. I am just putting in my .02 for the article.

The mags do that kind of thing :notnice:
and so do the tv shows :(

I let all my mag subscriptions run out
and
did not renew just for that very thing :D

To my way of thinking ...... these boards are the most reliable way to get trustworthy tech info :nice:

That is .............

once you figure out how to get past a bit of :bs:
to find the good stuff :rlaugh:

I'll have to re-look but I beleive it said they did the oil and K&N before the new intake.

Hey I am sorry but when a intake and TB upgrade gives that much gain over a ported cobra... I am still impressed...

If I had a cobra intake i wouldnt spend the money on that bbk its good looking but thats about it. If your going to make a new intake for a 20 year old motor you better make it more than pretty you better outperform everything else out there. hell you only have 10 other proven manifold to base your research on My vote is Crap on bbk. just my .02 i sure is pretty. ohh so pretty.

didn't Slow5.0 get something like a 20HP gain after changing his TB to like a 70mm or 75mm on his ported cobra? this is from what i remember i could be off on the numbers. but i remember him thanking Mike for the advise cause of the gain he had just from the TB swap.

so those 12hp can be reached with ease with a bigger TB. but of course you must have supporting mods for those gains.

I don't see what the big deal is:shrug: I haven't seen the artical yet but if they are saying they picked up 12 hp over a ported cobra, then I would say GREAT! Were not talking about what thay gained over a stock manifold, its a ported cobra. A properly ported cobra is no slouch. Its been proven time and time again to run right with and sometimes better than most of the aftermarket intakes out there. More impressive to me is the 5lb gain in torque. Anytime you can outgain a ported cobra in torque your doing somthing most other intakes can't. I think too many people have gotten hung up on peak hp numbers, they're nice to brag about, but torque wins races:D
Give me a nice flat torque curve from 3500-5500rpm, thats what I want for the street. If you want to look at numbers, don't look at the peak, look at the average, those are the ones that matter. If you have the time ,check this out
