Well being that I am a MMA fan I was really irritated when i found out that Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca tested positive for steroids. It's a real let down to me and I gotta say I lost a lot of respect for both of them

Anyway its well known that a lot of MMA fighters use steroids, and i guess it doesnt suprise me but it makes me mad because I really want to respect these guys for what they do and how hard they train and it really casts a shadow on the the whole sport and on the guys that dont use steroids...

Up until now I really liked Sean Sherk but this has really upset me...In a way I look up to some of the top UFC fighters because I believe it is one of the toughest sports you can compete in and they train so hard and manage to act so professional about everything even after they get done beating the living **** out of eachother but when stuff like this happens it really makes me sick...

Using steroids doesn't mean they didn't train hard. You don't take a shot in the butt and become a BAMF the next day.

Yeah you still do have to train hard but it still takes away from what they accomplish. Hopefully its not to wide spread in MMA but as competitive as the UFC has become in all weight classes some may feel as though steroids are there best way to be at the top.

Well if they're all doing it, isn't the playing field back to level?

no because thats the myth truly great fighters like BJ Penn are trying to dispell, everyone in MMA does not use steroids, its cheating plain and simple...

Heres what BJ Penn has to say about it http://cbs2.com/sports/local_story_201205427.html

and yes i agree you still train hard even with steroid abuse but the fact is its cheating and it still degrades the sport

Okay... So how's it cheating? Just because you're stronger it doesn't mean you're a better fighter... With any MMA you have to have technical skills and the ability to think quickly. It doesn't help you take a punch/kick or land one...

I'm not advocating steroid use, but It's not near as bad as some make them out to be. It hormone supplementation was/is so bad why are women allowed to take estrogen every day for personal convenience/choice... knowing it's the leading cause of a lot of health problems in that demographic (meaning women who take "birth control")

The argument against steroid use by the media is ridiculous...

Are you serious? How is it cheating? Its cheating because you are using an illegal growth hormone to get stronger than your opponents, and to say its not cheating is ridiculous...If your a wrestler strength is one of your primary tools in getting your oppenent to the ground and submissing him, yes technique is what it boils down to but if one guy is un-naturally strong because he took steroids than that is an unfair advantage...

I say your a ****ing if you take steroids plain and simple I have no respect for people who are only big because of the steroids they took. I have never taken suplements to get where I am...

BTW, you're the first person I've heard use the term "BAMF", other than my little brother and I.

I agree with the steroid enhanced strength being an unfair advantage in wrestling (greco-roman) but not MMA. YES I KNOW wrestling is a part of MMA, but with MMA I think it's based a lot less on strength than on technique.

I just think that if someone is eating and training (weights and MA) then steroids will provide very little advantage if any...

That's like saying people shouldn't train with weights, cause it improves their strength and gives them an unfair advantage. It ain't going to long before people whine about creatine and whey proteins and prohormone stuff you can get OTC.

I know what your saying and I see your point, but come on... If your argument is strength advantages caused from steroids, I think it's a very poor argument, that's all...

Well you should watch the video interview with BJ Penn i posted above, that pretty much sums it up. If it wasent a professional sport it wouldn't matter but the fact is that MMA is getting extremely competitive to the point where any small advantage can lead to one guy winning and one losing.

Where would YOU draw the line at saying competitors can't do something that would give them an advantage? Weights? Supplements? Learning a new Martial Art? Diet?

Does someone have an unfair advantage because they access to a gym with better equipment?

Or because they have access to/use a personal chef/trainer?

Or because they take/have better supplements?

Or because they've been trained by SOandSO?

The point is how do you determine IF something provides/d an "unfair" advantage? There's no objective way you can set standards to say whether or not something like steroids provides any substantial advantage over an opponent.

I think if anyone has read any of my other posts on the subject of steroids, knows that I am not against steroid use in general, but I think in this case, the rules are clear, and in this case they broke the rules. I do, however, agree that in perspective, it is no more of an advatage than other "legal" things. Hell, how many athletes would be where they are today without cortisone shots?

You draw the line when they take an ILLEGAL supplement like steroids, theres no two ways around it Sean Sherk and Hermes franca were using illegal drugs to give them an advantage...the bottom line is steroids are illegal to use in the United States

there is a big difference in what we refer to as steroid and hormon replacement. If a fighter has low testosterone, then it shud be used CORRECTLY. Using steroids is cheating, in the sence that its cheating the fighters that train there azzez off the old fashioned way. If you cant make on your own dont take a shot in the azz for some senthetic strenght and speed. It is degrading the sport just when ppl are starting to realize that it is a legit SPORT and that fighters are every bit if not moreso, athletic that football, and basketball players.

What surprises me is that so few actually do test positive. It just means there's enough money there for the guys to stay a step ahead of the testing curve. As to the benefit in MMA, they would be very beneficial. Steroids do a lot more than build strength. They also help in developing stamina. Not so much for the few minutes in a competition, but the hours in the gym. Instead of being able to train an hour a day at peak intensity, now you can train for longer. That's added reps to hone technique. Now you can learn a move and turn it into muscle memory/instinct in less time, which allows you to master a different technique sooner and so on. I was gonna say about the the only guy who doesn't juice is Tim Sylvia, but even his slightly soft body has been juiced.

I was hoping I was not the only one that noticed this...Regardless, steroids should be legalized Let each league/sports governing authority deal with the punishment for use & abuse of them. Let the general public use (use is the key word in all this, abuse is the word and usage style the media reports on) them and benefit from the many positives steroids can provide.
