Has anyone ever replaced the fuel filler with a more modern version that the gas pump can lock on? Not that I don't enjoy hunching my 6'4" frame over and finding that special angle so that it doesn't leak on the rear bumper. Thanks.
Not that I've seen yet but I have seen 2 other ways of remedying the splash back and pump as fast as you want issues.
One was to cut a slit in the turndown and weld in a disc with a hole in the center the same size as the unleaded nozzles (smaller than the old leaded ones). This prevented splash back but don't remember if it allowed full speed fill.
The other was to run a separate pressure relief line, one person welded a nipple to the tank near the filler hole and ran a vent hose up the side so the pressure could escape while the gas went in. I think the other version that
I'm thinking of trying is to cut a piece of clear hose just long enough to reach into the tank to work as a temp vent while I fill. Onced filled I can remove the hose and toss in the trunk.
You have to remember that with the smaller nozzles of the unleaded pump the speed and pressure have probably doubled so our unvented tanks can't let the air out of the tank as fast as the gas is coming in.
You could try the 2nd notch on the pump handle or even the lowest one. It will take a little longer but you won't have to keep stopping to burp it or have gas spit out.

I wouldn't really care if it was on the slowest flow setting but I would like to be able to just hook up the nozzle to the fuel filler and let her go as it is with modern cars. Standing hunched over, putting in fuel at half speed is getting tiresome. It's kind of a DD so long experimentation isn't really ideal. Those links would be great though, thanks.
I'm in the same boat, at 6'2" its difficult to fill up. Of course I'm 17, so I have a slight advantage. I have thought about cutting out the fuel filler and installing some sort of custom type filler so the gas pump will not fall out.
I'm thinking a fold down type door with a modern filler neck and cap inside. The fold down door would have the stock gas cap mounted to it and it would twist to lock/unlock the door.
Rmoore45 - Yeah I guess 22 might be a little young to complain. But you and I are on the same wavelength. You should do it first and then post it so I can copy.
There are just a few problems with my idea, there is not much space between the gas cap and the bumper, and the trunk latch support is in the way. I thought of this idea a while ago, now I remember why I never tried it.
