Hey guys. I'm new to Stangnet, but I have been into XR4Ti's and have been on their boards for a while. I have been checking into some mods for my basically bone stock '94 GT. It has a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust on it. That's the only mod. (I know, a VIRGIN 5.0. How can it be?! I bought it this way.) I want to start with the typical bolt ons. (headers, h-pipe, gears, cold air, etc) I've heard that the 94-95 GT engine processors don't like mods. Is this true? Whats the solution? I like the idea of the Pro-M conversion harness for using an A9L. (Or something.) Course, Pro-M doesn't exist anymore. Can I still get one, somewhere? I really don't have the bux for a tweecer or other aftermarket processor "fix". Plus, I really wouldn't know where to start (or finish) tuning on it. This car is really clean and nice and I don't want to live with any driveability issues. How much can I do without having problems? Thanks!!!!

dont forget pulleys

your not going to have to even think about drivibility issues unless you swap out the cam. also the AODE is controlled by the computer so you wouldnt be able to swap to the A9L (old automatics werent electronically controlled)

Welcome to the boards!

Actually, you can do the PIH conversion if you use a stand-alone trans controller. It seems to me that PMAS also offers their own conversion kit for AODE cars (for one stop shopping).

MHO is that for tuning an AODE car (especially), modifying your computer programming is a much better way to do it. A TwEECer allows a lot of trans control and a chip is also a real nice way to go (weight costs and the possibilities of all these things).

Good luck.

HEY WHATS UP rEDDY WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!! Sorry about the Caps, I get a little excited... You will love it here, all the information and insults you will ever need....LOL Just like family... If you need a Cold Air Induction (CAI) www.Procarparts.com for about $36 bucks.. MAC underdrive pulleys and you can pick up a set on Ebay for about $60 and a set of www.laurelmountainmustangs.com LMM lowering springs for about $150 and a 70MM throttle body by Professional Products for about $140 off ebay.

NOTE: make sure you visit the Reviews section of this site. It will give you a heads up on products before you spend the dough. For the PP throttle bodythey are known to stick at WOT (wide open throttle) the fix for that is to grab a piece of green scotchbrite open the butterfly and clean up the surface then take Graphite dry lube and lube the moving parts. Thats the same lube you put in door key hole in the winter.

hope this puts you in the right direction and good luck with your stang...

First of all...these boltons

(headers, h-pipe, gears, cold air, etc)

WILL NOT *REQUIRE* A CUSTOM TUNE NOR WILL THEY CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH THE ECU.

Tails of the SN95 5.0's ECU troubles have been greatly exagerated.

You will not run into problems until you run 30# or bigger injectors or until you run an aftermarket camshaft.

Okay, now that that's out of the way. :D

Those bolt-ons you listed would be a nice performance wake up. But, the biggest thing you can do for your AODE car is slap some 4.10s in the back...this will make a big difference. Next, a 2800-3000 RPM torque converter and a shift kit will wake that AODE up.

Also, the base Tweecer can be had for less than $400 and gives you lots of control over your shift points, line pressure, ect...real nice control.

For the cost of the PIH kit, the stand alone trans controller, a fan controller, and an A9L, you're gonna be pretty close $500 assuming you install it yourself. Like said above a base model Tweezer is about $400 and used RTs are being sold weekly over on Corral for $400-500. You can also get a mail order chip for less than that, and if I remember correctly my SCT chip and dyno time only cost a little more than $500.

But start with the basic bolt-ons and until you feel the need to change the cam you really don't have to worry about drivability issues.

Dont get into controversy about 3.73's vs. 4.10's.
Get the 4.10's, or you'll always say, "I wonder what 4.10's would feel like?" You will not be unhappy.
Also, Transgo's shift kit is a must.
Dont forget the cooler......

I do NOT agree. I say it depends on what gears he starts with. Every person I've read about that started with 2.73 and jumped to 4.10s had problems if they didn't alter the computer. Those with 3.08s had no problems going with the 4.10s. But to each their own. 3.73s are the safe route, and if he's into 1/4 mile times. I'm out of gear at the finish line on the spray, and dang close without it. Once I swap heads, I'm sure I'll be even happier I didn't go wih 4.10s. :D He's got the speed bug, he WILL get the extra power sooner than later, we all do. :SNSign:

BTW - Welcome to the new guy! Good to see another AODE driver. :nice:

I second the gears, shift kit, and converter. :)

One of the guys I was talking to said the same thing about 4.10's " with the overdrive you would be cool with 4.10's". I went with the 3.73's because I wanted to be able to beat or hang with a Vette or whatever on the top end side... with 4.10's you will get him on the jump but he will reel you in once you max out those gears.

Not that I race in the streets all the time, But for that A-hole that ask for it on a clear highway. He can get it!!!! Right now I'm a 5.Slow, I will soon be a 5.Go-Going-Gone, real soon!!!!

Shift points.
4.10's are the only way to go with the AOD/E trans. Get a tune after to set the shift points correctly along with a jmod or shift kit.

Been there done that, don't use Transgo and don't use B&M

Good luck.

Exactly.... shift points. It really depends on where you start, and what your car is setup for from the factory. Thus the reason for the different variations of our factory computers for the 94-95 AODE cars. Ever try to buy a replacement computer? There's more than one. :D

I personally don't want to "buy a tune" to get the little difference of going from 3.73s to 4.10s only to turn around a pull them right back out for topping out in the 1/4 mile with a small power adder. My computer would be one of those that would have to have a tune.... screw that. I'll get a tune, when I have HP mods added.

Also, not too sure about that comment with a Transgo shift kit. I know a TON of people that have used them quite successfully. I love mine.

I heavily reccomend the Jmod over the Transgo kit. But, I have seen bad things happen with the transgo's in the past, so I am bias.

I also heavily reccomend a tune OR a handhled tuner for adjusting shift points with the 4.10 gears.

Useing the PCM for trans control is better than the A9L swap - the computer is just too handy to have once you know what is going on.

hey guys, how is your topend speed with the 4.10's?

I know they are great for the 1/4, but after that what?

Well, I drive 4000lb cars, so the gears are a must for performance and power usage. But the truth is, if a datsun pulled up along me at 80mph on the hiway, I really have nothing left in terms of acceleration.

But MPG went up, town/street and seat of the pants performance went up, and my overall like of the gear is tops :)

I guess I got lucky...when I dropped my 4.10 in I had no problems (besides banging the rev limiter between 1 and 2, but that was fixed just by letting off the gas for a quarter second).

It's since been fixed by raising my rev limiter via the Tweecer.

Dunno, pretty high. My rebuilt AODE supposedly has a usable OD band (meaning I can stay full throttle in OD)....probably could get moving pretty good.
