Motor Flushing

Hello,
I am sick of this lifter rattle. I just bought this car and I think the last guy did't change the oil alot. Let me know if you have a method to flush the garbage out without washing the rings. Thanks Scott

Seafoam maybe?

I added a can to the crankcase just before I did my last oil change. Let it idle for 20 minutes or so.. Didn't make any difference that I could tell.

Whatever you do, don't drive around on whatever stuff you add to the crankcase. You don't want to put any load on the engine because your oil will be very very thin.

2001 Cobra

2001 Cobra with 98000 miles on the clock. Sounds just like the old GM rocker/lifter ticks. The noise stops on accel and sounds like a rock tumbler at high idles and when I back out of the throttle driving.

2001 cobra, 98k sounds like lifter rocker taps on an old GM motor when all you had to do was snug up a rocker or two and it would go away. Not so easy with this type. Thanks Scott

Just have it tuned up to start with. If you want to splurge a little but do it right take it to an SVT dealership and get it checked out and tuned up. This will probably costs between $300 and $1200 depending on what they find because the dealer is gonna be pricey. But I believe the dealer is a good reliable option and generally a safe choice for repairs especially the old SVT dealerships.

alot on here (myself included) will tell you to go to a dealer instead of taking advice from, well to be honest, people who don't know what they're doing

you'll get stuck with alot of "well try this..." or "if that don't work try that...". if you can give a little more information (hot, cold, intermittent, etc.) we can help you make an educated guess but it's still a guess

i don't want to turn you away from Stangnet because there is ALOT of info on here but trying to diagnose a noise over an internet forum is very difficult sometimes

last bit of advice:
if you take off the cap and see alot of sludge switch to synthetic and start changing it more frequently until it clears up, i'd stay away from "engine flushes"

I only asked for an engine flush recommendation, I am aware of the cause of the noise, Gee Wiz thanx anyway

I don't know if this works well on the OHC motors but on a pushrod motor you can drain a quart of oil and add a quart of ATF. Drive it for about 50 miles then change the oil. Helps clean out the block.

Well too bad, you have not provided enough information to diagnose the problem I had to f'n drag the information out of you that you have provided so far and that is still not enough.

If you want to solve the problem here use a listening device to locate the exact location of the sound. Post a picture of the location of the sound. Record the sound and link us to the audio file. Then maybe we can help you.

Engine flush is crap that Sears Automotive does

Sounds are very very difficult to diagnose over the internet

Good luck...

Oh and do not put ATF in your crankcase

trouser trout; you just don"t get it do you? I never asked for anyone to diagnose the LASH ADJUSTER tapping on the #8. I just wanted input on the vast methods of engine douching. And I have already bought a NEW set of heads for less than a trip to the old dealer. I can drive that car clean and at the same time might even get the tappets to play nice before I change over.

Just put the pipe down, go outside and kick a puppy or two and slap the neighbors kids around till your calm enough to read all the posts.

Run some Lucas fuel treatment in your gas, you can put 2 bottles in 1 tank.
Run some thin synthetic oil, 5w20, change out in a shorter time frame than
normal.

the only flush that ive heard works is the Bilstein one. and ya i used to be a tech at sears, they pushed that flush crap they use on us. they didnt like it when i threw a bunch of stuff back at them that they didnt expect a tech to know.

Lucas oil might free the lifter from sticking. Run that will some straight 30w oil and see if the noise goes away.
