MSD cap and rotor, worth it?

I was at advance auto parts the other day and I saw it for sale at $24.99

Well today I was having misfire problems, but I think I might have solved it by sanding the contacts on my cap, and rotor. They seem pretty worn, and all blackend. For as long as I have had my car, I never changed the cap/rotor. I've had the car for about 4 years now, and who knows the last time it was changed.

Anyways, would I benefit from the MSD pieces? Or would I just be paying for the name? Also how many miles should you change the cap/rotor at?

I've had an MSD cap and rotor and I replaced it with a Niehoff (sp?) cap and rotor, didn't know any difference. Personally, I think you just pay for the name.

u basically just paying for the name..wouldnt really improve anything...my opinion

Your paying for something better than stock as it comes with brass terminals 4yrs and you have no clue when its been changed?? Change it!

lol, it still works, thats why I've never changed it, I've had no problems with it or anything

That must be nice, i've only had my car 6 months or so and i've replaced a ton of stuff.

Summit has the cap for $11.88 and the rotor is like $4.00.

Most likely paying extra for the name.. I bought it when doing regular maintence, mainly to replace the old one and I like the way it looked. Could of bought a regular part and it probably would of worked just as good. It's sorta like buying billet stuff for the interior, chrome valve cover's, polished underhood items,,etc...... Replace something old & worn out, for maintence & improve on the car's performance, with a new piece that adds to the looks.

By time you figure, handling charges, it come's out about the same. You may save a couple dollars from Summit, but have to wait a few days for the item.

I had one, but I wasn't impressed with it. The contacts are a little wider, so they threw off the timing. Now, my timing isn't radical at all. (I don't know what it is, but it's tuned for smoothness, not performance.) Anyway, after the cap change the engine idled rougher and more metallic. The stock aluminum contacts become white powdery after use (at least mine do), but the brass ones got all black right away. The white power is easy to clean, but the black marks left on the brass ones were not so easy to clean.

My recommendation? Give your local Ford parts dept. a visit.
(Better call them first to see if they have a one.)

Bottom line if you have a stock ignition system then the stock cap and rotor will work fine. Not forever but I change mine every two years about 24K! If you have a high performance ignition module go with the brass!

I have a MSD 6AL. When I sanded the contacts on my current cap, they were gold, so maybe it's brass....
