Good looking flywheel Mike. How were those Quadruple IPA's?

No no no no. Trust me I’m going to take my merry time torquing these 6 bolts down.

Haven’t cracked one yet. Probably will tonight while I work on the flywheel and clutch install.

So I got it mostly buttoned up. The ARP clutch bolts I bought didn’t fit. Wrong thread pitch. Must have gotten the earlier year as they had the shoulder on the bolt. Used the ford bolts instead.

My clutch fork pivot was toast. So new one on order

So sinc I couldn’t finish, I decided to test fit the 83-85 and 85-93 bell to see if there were any differences.

As far as I can tell, there aren’t. Clearance on the clutch is tight, but exactly the same. Spinning the flywheel around doesn’t really show any difference. I’ll do a thread later with some clay and measure the exact clearance.

Btw...it’s tight. Not sure if the new flywheel pushes the clutch out a tad, but I have less than 1mm of clearance with both bells. I can’t even slide a penny between the pressure plate and bellhousinh here. I’m curious of it was always like that or the flywheel is thicker? Wonder if I should clearance here? Prob wouldnt hurt to just massage it with a grinder....just in case.

Btw, the name of that IPA comes from a famous Boston landmark where you can actually row a boat under a train, car and plane at the same time. I’ve done it.

What [should] the clearance be? I don't think I've ever measured but I do recall thinking it was tight and that the DF/CF was my difference.

No idea. I never checked the clearance with the other flywheel.

It doesn’t hit but it’s damn tight. Tight enough to make me want to kiss it with a grinder

Edit: guess it is common.

Drivetrain - Clearancing bellhousing for pressure plate

So I just finished buttoning everything up yesterday afternoon on my '90 5.0 hatch after replacing the rear main seal, flywheel, clutch, TOB, clutch fork, clutch cable and firewall adjuster. The clutch kit is a CJPP King Cobra, FRPP flywheel and OEM clutch cable. The bellhousing is original...

And like i said, both generations appear to be the same. I’ll stuff some clay in there and measure to prove it.

Seems like it would have to 'grow' a smidge by 6250 or at least find center.

Maybe retorque and recheck?

Just to see if anything moves.

You should be fine as long as the boat doesn’t hit the bridge. You might have to duck.

Cool stuff for sure! I’m going to have to look for some Trillium on my next trip to stock up the fridge.

Pivot arrives. Yes you can still buy them from Ford cheaper than what LRS sells their reproduction for

Does not come with the lock ring that is typically under the pivot, so you’ll need to keep yours

Drivetrain - T5 bellhousing differences: 83-85 vs 86-93

The is more of a general FYI. I don't want to issue a blanket statement based on testing between only 2 samples. Since I had an 83-85 bell and 86-93 bell, I decided to see what the differences were. There was a lot of statements about the early bells being smaller, or then being the same...

And wrapped up the engine. Since the pressure plate was close, I figured I’d just clearance the bell while I was here.

A few mins with the grinder made some extra breathing room

Tough to see, but about 0.100” clearance now

All bolted up an clutch fork installed

Starter bolted up too.

Just need to clean this up and paint it and the driveline is done!

Gonna leave the trans off for now. It’s in my basement out of the way. Figure I’ll need the space in the garage for what’s up next.

As for what’s next? Fix the frame rails, and install this

Hopefully this next phase of the build is cheaper.

I know it’s been said before, but your attention to detail really shows that the small things add up. Kudos for an outstanding job.

Your last post made make me chuckle. I thinks that’s a constant thought all gear heads have, hopefully the next phase is cheaper!

Frame Rails ins't going to be cheaper but when it's finished it'll all be worth it.

I know. I still have plenty of little things to nickle and dime me. Need engine mounts, vac lines, hoses, an A/C condenser, hardware, etc etc etc.

Right now, i'm trying to figure out how i'll label everything and keep track of what wire goes where and routing and such. I started pulling some stuff from the bay, like the charcoal canister and some items I know very well where they go.

I'm starting to realize this project is likely going to roll through the summer and possibly fall.
