I've mentioned on here a few times that I bought a '90GT that is in BAD shape to make a turbo car out of. Well, I was going through some old disc with pics and I came across this one of it. I figured I'd put it up here for you to see. The car is a '90GT with a blown motor and a blown AOD. I have a chance to buy a wrecked fox body GT 5 speed car with a working motor and tranny for $700... I'm debating on doing this until I can afford to do the turbo, at least this way I can drive the thing for a while and drag race it. I want an auto in the car when I do the turbo, but that might be a few years down the road, so I think the 5 speed would be more fun for now. What would you do, rebuild the motor and AOD, or swap both from a donor car that has been rolled over?

Yeah do the swap. I would then work on a junkyard turbo kit since you already have a something that's nice aw well as fast to play with. You are running low 12's now, are you shooting for tens with the turbo fox or what?? :D

John, I'm actually shooting right now for an 11 second stock LONG block turbo car, and from the research I did that seems like a definite possibility. I don't want anything too crazy, and I don't want to have to spring for an R/dart block if I can avoid it. I thought about throwing in an explorer motor with GT40P heads (I can get them for around $850 complete) but I am worried about using the GT40P heads for the turbo setup due to the headers. Like I said, this is going to be a LONG term project. I bought the car to have something to drag race every week, and to do a turbo on.

SUperstang- I love fox bodies. I used to have a 91lx 2.3l and I swore I'd own a fox 5.0L someday. My dad has a pretty wild NA 91GT (it runs 11.95 at 115mph NA), and I love to drive it. Here's dad's car...

That would be a fun project. I always wanted to get a notchback and get it to run 12's with a full road racing setup :D

I still say do the swap so you can have an 11 second 5spd, lots of cool factor there. Kinda like that turbocharged GT from X2C that ran 9's with a 5spd. It would be faster with the auto but not nearly as cool to watch. Probably less entertaining to drive too.

Mark, I quit going to TM.com because I was becoming obsessed... literally. I was ready to max my credit card just to buy a HP kit, then reality set in. I figured this is the best way for me to do it. Had I turbo'd my '95 I would have had over $10K in the turbo and shortblock buildup, and that just didn't make any sense to me. I figure for under $5K I can buy this car, and turbo it if I fab up my own, and it will end up being quicker than my '95!

Jakob- that pic is from Cecil, but we run at PRP (Pittsburgh Raceway Park), Mason, and my dad has raced at Beaver Springs before. We've been to Cecil twice now and its our favorite track as its a FAST track to run at. PRP is our "home" track as we are only about 50 minutes from it. I live in Altoona and can be at Mason in 1-1/4 hrs and Beaver in around 2. We were at Maple Grove this weekend for the NMRA race and it was around 3-1/4hrs. We left dad's car at home but entered mine in the car show where I placed 1st in the 94-95 class. SInce I'm talking about my dad's car, I might as well show you mom's too. She has an '01BULLITT. I ran a 13,5 at 101mph BONE STOCK on ET streets, mom ran a 13.8 in it!

Thanks Chris! I did the NA thing long enough, now I want to try my hand at forced induction!

Mark, if I was going to do a turbo on the 95 I wanted to buy something that looked as good as it ran, and the HP kit fit the bill. On this '90, I do plan to fab up my own setup.

Mike- Its funny you ask that because you would think based on the rest of my family that she would, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. She pretty much hates my car and swears she'd NEVER own a mustang of her own. When I met her she didn't know what kind of car she drove!!! But, I have influenced her a little, but I think I created a monster as she now likes things like BMW's, audie's, mercedes, etc. She wants a little convertible like the audie TT SO BAD. She could care less if it had 100 or 500hp just as long as it was cute and looked good. I wish things were different, but I know there is no hope in them changing. The funny thing about my parents is that normally kids take after their parents... in my famiy it was the opposite. I got into mustangs and racing first, then my dad bought his, my cousin got his, and then finally my mom wanted in on the action and bought her car. The warrenty is up this month on her bullitt and I know she's dying to start on it.

hey why don't you try and get the car running on "spare parts" you know the stuff you or your dad took off ? i know you told me already about some of the stuff but we could take the car apart and see whats wrong and go from there ? maybe it's just in the heads ? just some more thoughts oh and thanks for the pics you sent me . i'll post them here later today .

Paul - I'd buy the 5-speed car. Have you ever ripped open an automatic especially an AODE and tried to make sense of it all? They are expensive, and if you did rebuild it, you would still have the stock converter. If you decided to go with an aftermarket converter, it would have to be very tight because the car isn't making that much power. Once it starts turning out more horsepower, you'd could get it loosened up. I like automatics in a car where you can install it once and forget about it. In your case, I'm afraid that wouldn't be.

Look at the picture of your Dad's car. Did that yellow Viper run while you guys were there? I actually like your Dad's car because it's one color. Some Fox GTs are two-tone and I hate it. :notnice:

Joe

Striped- yes it is. I told him it'd look better than the motorsport one that he had on it in the other picture. I told him to get rid of the plate holder completely but he won't.

Troy- the guy I bought it off of had it to a shop and they said that one of the pistons was cracked. I don't know how they know that, but that's what the invoice says.

Joe- I was thinking the same thing on the converter, I'd hate to have to do it again which I know I would. The thought of putting a C4 in it has crossed my mind too. I don't remember what the viper ran, but there was a cool pic of it racing a yellow Z06 that day too. I don't remember where I saw it at though.

I'll let dad know that you guys like his car. That means a lot to him, he doesn't give his car enough credit.

Paul good deal man. :nice: Do the swap and then enjoy it until you can afford to with it what you want. It will happen sooner than later you'll see, a little here a little there. :D Uhmmm......wash your car :p
