the car has lowering springs , Flowmaster cat back and a BBK h-pipe with cats and a pro 5.0 shifter> I just put new tires on it today and am ready to pound the crap out of it .

you have to decide what you want out of the car, but for a good first mod i would do gears.

Wow, sounds like you got a REAL good deal.

Budget minded mods are a complete PI swap. 99-04 heads/cams/intake and that will put you a little ahead of a stock 99-04 GT in terms of power.

If you do that, it's also a good time to ditch the stock 99-04 cams in favor for something more agressive, and install longtube headers.

+1 for the full PI swap.

A set of cams would be a great addition; even mild XE262AHs from Comp will give 20+ HP up top on a PI top end without sacrificing low-end torque. I would just verify that these cams are compatible with PI heads on a non-PI bottom end (i.e. check for PTV...)

Gears won't net any additional power but they'll wake the car up around town, especially a heavy 'vert.

Properly welded-on full-length subframe connectors, like from Maximum Motorsports.

Depends on if you buy new or used parts. New, each head (assembled w/cams) is around $400, plus $190 or so for the intake. There are other odds and ends you need to make it complete that add a little more on.

All 99-04's arent the same. 99-00 heads specifically are Windsor heads and have press on cams gears, not bolt on, and they have individual cam caps and not girdles. They also use a different timing cover.

01-04 heads have bolt on cam gears, cam girdles, and the same timing cover as your engine.

96-98, 01-04 are "Romeo" engines. 99-00 are "Windsor" engines. You can swap parts between the two, but when you mix them you will need extra parts to make it all work.

You really should make a plan of what you want to have the car do for you, look at pricing and then go for it. A good source of beginning advice is maybe reading this:

Project Red Headed Stepchild

I have to say though, my first buys would be subframe connectors and some wheels, and then go from there. For example: There's no sense in buying a set of 4.10s as an impulse buy now, if you plan on going with a twin screw blower later.

^That was an awesome project, i really followed that one. First mods should be gears(4.10's would be good for a vert) and subframe connectors. Along with a pi swap and Long tubes BTW that baby looks good

well after riding in my buddys 04 gt with acold air intake, long tube's, x-pipe and a slp cat back my car feels very SLOW ! I hope my 150 nos kit will help
but he did ride in mine and we agree it does have gears in it > (3.55 / 3.73) I'll have to wait till i need to to fix something in the rear to find out which one it is . and i found my klunk the exhaust is hitting the body some where so it will be up on the jack soon to fix that ! i'll start shopping for parts as soon as I can scrap up some more cask > x-mas and buying the car drained my cash for a little while .
