Listen for pinging when you really get on it. I bumped mine up to 14 degrees and with 93 octane, there is a little pinging. Dont forget, only use premium gas now. That sheet aint cheap these days either.

Setting the timing using the #5 plug wire will cause your car to run like crap

Yes...be careful of pinging (detonation, spark knock, whatever you want to call it etc...). With my stock heads and similar mods to you, I couldn't run anything over 14* without the can of marbles going off at WOT.

I never notice any power difference with advancing the timing. I've had it to 16° before and it only seemed to sort of smooth out the power band according to the butt meter

I dunno, I bumped mine up from 5 to 14 (it was at 5 when I bought it) and it felt a hella lot quicker. But now it pings slightly so it needs to come down a degree or two. I know bumping up the timing can give you anywhere from 5-10 hp depending on the car.

I read in MMFF a while ago "20 minute tne-up" that bumping the timing can add up to 20 at the wheels.......

I heard more too, but I was being conservative cuz I knew the critics would jump all over me if I even began to mention more than 5-10.
