Why does my '93 Town Car (4.6 220 HP Dual Exhausts) seem to have a lot more low end torque than my '04 GT? Even my '81 Corvette with only 190 HP seems to have more torque at much lower RPMs. Just curious.

Sometimes cars are set up so that a little gas pedal gives a larger throttle-open response. I'd bet if you nailed both of them (wide open throttle) the results would be different.

Probably largely due to the gears in the differentials...

....and unless you've tinkered with it. Your '93 Towncar has 210hp with the optional dual exhaust, not 220hp.

Also keep in mind that this is a Non-PI engine in your Lincoln. The smaller more "torque friendly" Throttle Body and earlier NPI heads which had smaller ports and more torque compliant cam profiles contribute to a slightly better off idle throttle response to get the car up and moving. This is pretty much only relative until about 2000rpm though, which is about when a PI motor would surpass your NPI mill and continue to pull harder all the way to redline.

As for your Vette. Although those year Corvette’s are pretty much considered dogs according to today’s standards, you’re still working with an OHV 350cid vs. an OHC 281cid. Aside from the engine configuration.....longer stroke and bigger displacement equals better off idle and low-end torque, when compared to small bore, short stroke engine, every time.

Want more off the line torque? Try pushrod power.
