I went to the track on friday and raced my car for the first time in about three years. 1st and 2nd gear went great in my stock t-5. When i hit 3rd the tranny went boom .... then it just grinded and banged the rest of the way. The car coasted to a 17 second at 53 mph. I drove home (about 7 miles) in 1st, 2nd and 5th... banging all the way. 3rd and 4th gears were non-existant. It sounded like a gear was just bouncing around in the box and hitting the rotating gears. Is this a common problem w/ the t-5? (3rd gear breaking that is?) I want to switch to a Tremec but do I need to change my clutch setup also? Will the output shaft of the Tremec match to my stock driveshaft? How do I determine what model Tremec to get? I would eventually like to run a stroker motor with around 500 hp. Thanks in advance.

3rd gear is usually the weakest link, t-5 are good to around 35-400 rwhp. If you were to upgrade to a tremec, they make different kits that allow you to either keep or get rid of the stock cluch. You will need to get a new slip yoke for the driveshaft, and a new bellhousing. Check out the new TKO 500 and 600.

That's one reason I don't drive my car to the track, you really should look at getting a 3550 or 6-speed. And when your over your 350 400 rwhp, you really a tougher tranny
