sounds like a bad spot in the flywheel or the starter "bendix" gear stripping out (the bendix is the gear on the starter that engages the flywheel)...sounds like thats what you heard...can't be too sure without hearing it myself though...

I would bet that it is the starter. Mine did it to me. I went to start it and it made a really loud skreeching sound whenever I went to start it.

my guess would be starter. if you get the car fired up and the nise continuses the it would probably be a accesory

My 97 GTP owns you ALL!
i would take the belt off and check all the pulleys. my p/s pump went completely out and cause a skreeching sound and afterabout 2 days it got bad enough that it wouldnt let the car start.

take the belt off and see if you can freely move all the accesory pullies, Smog, AC, Power steering. See if the pullies have an play in them, as 86bluecobra said, if it just makes the noise when you start it, its probably a starter, if it continues, its most likely an accessory. Get a friend to start it while you poke your head under the hood and listen for where its coming from.
yea it only does it when i try to start it.. can someone explain why and what the noise is a little more clear? does it have to do nething with the flywheel?? hopefully not bc i dont want to replace one of those!! is it just a gear or something in the starter??

take the belt off and start it up. if the sound goes away, its the belt. i have the same problem except i know its my belt slipping. going to the parts store tonight for a new belt. i dont even have any seized pulleys and it still makes the noise
I think someone else suggested this, and I agree with it too. It is the quick and dirty way to see what is up.luckythirteen13 said:take the belt off and start it up. if the sound goes away, its the belt. i have the same problem except i know its my belt slipping. going to the parts store tonight for a new belt. i dont even have any seized pulleys and it still makes the noise
Just dont let the car run for more than a minute or so like that.
Good luck.

the first thing i would do is ensure the starter is properly seated and bolts are tight and have not worked loose proper torque for starter bolts is 15-19 ft. lbs.

Agreed. But before you torque it down, take it off the bell housing and look the gear over on it. If the teeth are chipped up or some are missing, replace it. My buddy had a starter gear that was so eaten up it wouldn't even turn the flywheel over. All the teeth on it were worn down and broken off. I was amazed he hadn't damaged the flywheel to badly, he had one missing tooth though. But he still has that flywheel, just replaced the gear on the starter and its ran fine, that was over a year ago.

I'm having this screeching noise only at start up and after 20-30 seconds it goes away..it's a stick. starter is less then 2 years old from Advance..already took the serp belt off and spun all pulleys..has no AC, no smog pump..is it easy enough to replace the starter/bendix bearing..starts up fine other then the horrible screech noise..
So you still have the noise with the belt off?
