need a cam that will YANK!!!

Well, i don't wanna name a bunch of names, and let me make it totally clear that i'm not bashing Ed in any way shape or form, i'm only going by this particular case and who knows why it is how it is. Also let me assure you, the guys who tuned the engine are top notch, easily among the best in our tristate area so they know their stuff and with the popularity of Eds cams, i'm sure they've done at least a few of their cams to know.

As for the goals of the engine, it's a 347 with Edelbrock Victor Jr heads and a Systemax intake and all the associated goodies to make it all work right. Lets just say the numbers were disappointing. When the cam was ordered it was to be for a STREET performance setup. Now, for whatever reason this combo made less torque and only 15hp more than his last 347 made with GT40P heads and a Typhoon intake with the afore mentioned X303 cam. It totally baffled all of us, including the guys tuning the engine. Right now my buddy is pretty much back to the drawing board and searching for some kind of phantom problem as to why it made such low numbers.

So it wasn't just a cam swap it was the whole combo? If thats the case how can you even begin to point fingures at the cam or cam builder? If it was the exact same set up, with only a cam swap I can see having it narrowed down.

Also we have 7 Mustangs at the house... thats with no friends visiting. When I have a half dozen over, well over 10 Mustangs! :D

Your tuner probably does not know who he is.

I have two guesses why he said what he did:

1. You were going to get the cam through him.
2. That is all he is familiar with.

Trickflow cam's are great for a budget, but they cannot compare to a custom, except in price.

Any good custom cam grinder is going to overshadow a trickflow.

Valid points... I am extremely happy but I am willing to look at everything from all angles. I agree with the better vacuum and complete needs based specs due to the custom grind and am once again happy with decision. Sure sounds like I am wishy washy, but to explain Ed has been top notch with me but I wanted to see a bit higher gains. I wont by any means blame him though, as I am sure there is improvement to be had in my combo:nice:

Ok maybe i didn't make myself clear the first time...

1) i am NOT badmouthing Ed. I know very well that Ed knows his $hit...but that doesn't change the situation and that's all i'm commenting on.

2) this is a brand new engine, everything new and fresh from assembly and the cam was built with these parts in mind, not just a cam swap or whatever. The other engine i was comparing to was ANOTHER 347 with a completely different build up. The engine with the EC cam was a different block and all, and only shared the crank and rods from the previous engine.

You guys get worked up too quick. I said i would swear by a custom cam....and i also said i wasn't bashing Ed....i know very well that a custom cam is far superior to an off the shelf cam. *BUT* that doesn't change the fact that this engine, build with the cam that he made specifically for this very engine, part for part, only made a mere 315hp. My logic tells me that something must be wrong with some other part of the engine, but we have yet to find ANYTHING out of the ordinary. Time will tell and/or a complete tear down...

Are you guys skim reading my posts or what?

I dont know if you are referencing me at all, but I am sure not worked up at all. Hope I am not coming across as though I am:shrug: You guys actually helped me reaffirm the happiness of my decision to go with Ed!:)

I read everything in this thread, and am nowhere near worked up. I don't owe Ed anything, have met him once or twice, but other than that could care less. I am merely saying...

I used to think that way until my buddy got one of his cams and it made less power than his old X did. Now i'm not so sure.

When I read that I think he had a combo, took the X cam out, tossed in a custom grind and lost xx hp...

but for some reason it made a crap load less torque and only 15hp more than the X303 did, and it's a duel pattern 580ish lift on the intake and 620ish on the exhaust.

Again same thing running through my mind only he made more power now, but less tq, which is fine.

Now here I see it is a completely different motor, with all different parts, that made 15 more hp, but less torque. I 100% believe it, but from the get go I assumed you knew it was the cam that was causing the slightly higher power but less torque, when in actuality, noone really knows. Something could be off, amiss, parts could be wrong, who knows? Could be weak valve springs, could be lower compression, could be a computer issue, who is to say. I just assumed you knew Ed's cam was the reason behind it not working as well as it should, when in actuality it isn't proven.

Also, I am not sticking up for anyone, or even attacking you, just trying to get the whole picture together, which it appears to be in the last post. Old motor made xxx hp and xxx tq, all new motor made xxx hp and xxx tq which had an Ed cam, but also a ton of other new different parts. Could be the cam, might be the cam, but could be a number of other things.

Just my take on it, not uncalm, not out of control, not even trying to attack or be mean, just my 0.02!

I read what you said 85_SS_coupe.

I originally read that it was just the cam that was swapped, therefore comparing X cam vs. FTI cam.

That is what my original comments were towards:nice:

I dont know how anyone could even compare a custom cam to an alphabet cam.

Anyways, I went from a TFS 1 to a bennet racing custom and its beyond night and day difference, better power, longer powerbad, better driveability.

Well i wasn't bent out of shape or anything, it just seems like lately around here you can't say anything without being misunderstood.

Anyways, if i were buying a new cam, i would likely go with a custom cam. The only issue for me is that i change my combo a LOT so that's not always budget minded for me either. I'd have to really be satisfied with a set of heads and a cam to finalize it all with a custom cam. I got my X for free so that'll do for now.

I'll keep everyone updated on this 347 thing. I guess my original comment wasn't really what i was trying to say. Clearly there's something afoot with the engine or drivetrain that's robbing power, as i can't imagine how the heads/cam/intake on this engine could make any less than 350-375hp to the wheels.
