need a little help

I am just about ready to put in a triax shifter in my 87 gt and was wondering if I had to take the entire center consol out in order to remove the boot plate. I can not reach two bolts that hold down the boot plate in the front of the shifter. The instructions say on 86 and earlier you need to remove the entire center consol. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Do you have to remove the entire consol just to reach the bolts? If not how do you reach the bolts.
Thanks

IIRC, those pesky bolts are 8 or 10 mm. i used one of those ratcheting box end wrenches to get them out. then after that, i had to pull the console anyhow, since the front shifter bolts (13MM, IIRC) were seized in. with the console in place, i could not decently get a 3/8 ratchet (and extensions and swivels) onto the bolt.

so try a ratcheting box end, and if you have to pull the console, it is not hard. i used the opportunity to make a black vinyl boot around my ebrake (the space around the lever is open and ugly).

good luck.
