Need a new (stronger) 4R70W

When getting a High Performance transmission, is AODE and 4R70W the same thing? Where's the best place to get an automatic for a 2002 model? And are they a direct replacement or do you have to do fabrication work and chip reflash? I'm using the KB chip and I'll be doing the install myself.

BTW, my OD died and it took out 3rd gear also - not fun driving 25MPH with 4.10's on the highway.

4R70W >>> AODE

The 4R70W is a very strong transmission, there is no stronger auto from Ford.

I suggest some reading on www.tccoa.com

My fluid still looks brand new, so I'm hoping that I didn't fill my cooler(s) full of clutch fiber and metals. Hope it just "broke" something. I've checked Rock Auto and they sell an "OE" transmission and converter for less than 1,200.00 but I don't know if it is built any stronger than stock. I'd sure like to get one that my KB couldn't beat up on. Guess I need to start saving for a forged longblock, rear axle...

And I did bookmark the tccoa site. Thanks!

Well, if the transmission has failed, it is recommended that you replace the radiator and, if you have one, the transmission fluid cooler.

How many miles were on the transmission? What was the cause of the failure? The TCCOA website seems to indicate the certain shifts, I believe the 3-4 shift under WOT is very risky due to the transmission design.

The TCCOA website has articles written by a very well informed expert of Ford automatic transmissions.

The 4R70W is basically just a beefed up, electronic version of the AOD with better gear spacing. Kilgore is right though, the 4R70W is a better slush box by comparison. You're 2002 is about the best of the best as far as this transmission goes, so you've got a pretty good base to start from.

A good performance rebuild with the J-mod that is suggested in the tccoa articles and a secondary transmission cooler should be mandatory if you're making any sort of power at all. Since you're running an 11psi KB, you must be making at least 300rwhp, right ;), so in that case these upgrades should be mandatory. A better converter to put the power to the ground more efficiently wouldn't hurt either.

Running the factory cooler in radiator and also a Ford Racing cooler. Had 37,000 miles when things got ugly - WOT going into OD. I forgot to turn the OD off...
:bang:

This is what broke...

Transmission guy said he never saw one broken so bad as mine. He said the "fat end" breaks more often, but mine was snapped in two pieces at the long splined end. The splines got rotated bad enough it actually split the "Drum" spline area that the shaft goes into. And the smooth section of the shaft was rotated about an 1/8 - 1/4 of a turn - enough for the shaft to splinter and crack in about 4 places.

Rebuilding back with SHD shaft, drum and better friction material. Also adding a deep TCI pan and better valve body.

Before you do that PM Darrin over at Modulardepot.com. He builds them strong and has a really good reputation.

No offense to your shop, but I don't know of anyone who is selling built 4R70Ws that knows them as well as he does.

wot into OD = bad news.... sorry about your luck. 4r70w's are awesome besides that. JimFitz's is pretty badass

here is a link to his car and his trans set up is listed...along with his KB setup

Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll be okay with this transmission builder. I don't go to the track and I don't street race (any more) so I basically have more power than I need, but for now I'll just stay away from OD if I'm giving it much throttle at all.
