need advice on my 65 mustang

My 65 gt350 clone with a standard 289 and automatic tranny has started doing some peculiar things. It will start and run fine at a high idle speed (1200 rpm or so) but when you put it in drive it stops immediatly unless you rev it up to 2500 or so and pop it in gear. It seems more electrical that carb. It has a electronic accel disributor. Any ideas? thanks Here is a pic when it had the MSD dizzy

I dont know the answer. But the car looks great. Maybe a vaccum leak?

Have you checked the timing? A loose distributor can slide back retarding the timing to where it wont run at low speed. Kinda unlikely tho. A vacuum leak would certainly do it, try checking the carb nuts and intake bolts along with any vacuum hoses (pcv, vac adv, mod valve, etc). I recently had a helluva time with rust getting past the filter and into the carb. Even after I cleaned the carb, it wouldnt idle worth a ****. I had to clean it out again before I got everything out, and now it runs like a champ again. I wouldnt rule out fouled plugs either, but Im still leaning toward a problem with the carb.

17 inch wheels with new standard susp and Shelby mod on front.

I changed the carb and it still does the same thing, starts a runs great untill you put it in gear(forward or reverse) and it stops. Could it be the neutral safety switch somehow doing this? and would it run if the rpm's are kept high enough if this were the problem. Again, it idles well and revs well if in park or neutral. thanks again

recently change the intake on it? could be a manifold vacuum leak.

start the car from under the hood, then hold the throttle open with your hand, and with your other hand, spray around all possible vacuum leak spots with some starting fluid. if the rpm increases, that's where your leak is.

what is your timing set at? also what are the specs on the cam? it sounds like you have the timing retarded to the point that it can't hold the engine at idle in gear.

I will check for vacuum leaks and the timing. It is almost as if some electrical feedback occurs and shuts it down.
