Okay, I'm moving, and I can't take my cell service with me (or the phone). I'm going to be using WalMart's Straight Talk, and I need to buy a phone. I'm thinking an Android phone. Easy enough? Not exactly.

I'm rough on phones. I'll put it to you this way. I use a Sonim "Explosives Environment" phone. Naturally, it won't work with Straight Talk.

I looked at a bunch of military grade android phones, and they looked cool . . . only they're setup for Asia, and 3G there isn't the 3G here. It would work, but would be 2G only.

So, what do you guys recommend. About the only thing that comes anywhere near close is the Samsung Rugby, but it's not all that.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Kyocera hydro or you can get a Verizon phone flashed. In that case Casio commando 4g. Not a power phone by any means but 4g capable and mil spec tough.

I'm on a contracted iphone 4s and am just paying additional insurance until I can find a decent protection case for it. When I find one that I'm happy with, I'll drop the insurance.

Get one of the new waterproof/resistant phones, put it in a Lifeproof case. If you went through a carrier you could pay for insurance, which has covered me in the past for running over my phone in my coupe once.

I know you're moving to Florida and the only good service in the State is AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile and Sprint for some reason just aren't that great. My Company is switching from AT&T to T-Mobile and I'm switching from an iPhone5S to a Galaxy S5. Sucky part T-Mobile doesn't work at my house so they sent me a free booster. My family says it's only 3G with the booster. This is gonna suck.

Can verify, ditched Sprint after they laid my sister off (she'd been with them five years) because I'd always hated their crappy service, constant dropped calls, maintenance outages with no warning... switched to T-Mobile this past month, so far unimpressed, but I'm not sure if the issues are from them or the phone I went with (Nokia Lumia 521, wanted something other than an Android, and not ready to become an iDrone yet... love Windows 8 on the phone, but that's about the extent of my positive things to say about the whole deal at this point, along with no contract and a decent monthly bill).

We went from Sprint to Verizon a month or so ago. This Droid Maxx along with Verizon make Sprint look so bad.
I left Verizon for the Sprint employee discount...

Went from 1 single dropped call in three years (and I travelled a lot more back then, ZERO dropped calls from Texas to Minnesota and Wisconsin and back on a single trip, zero dropped calls in the valleys and hills in south Texas, 1 single dropped call at home) to dropping an average of 1-2 calls a day with Sprint (and now none 4-6 days a week and then a ton 1-3 days a week with T-Mobile, on random days).

I miss Verizon, but they want too much money for any of their plans that meet my needs. (though one could argue my current plan fails in that respect as well)

My calls were fine. It was the data speed. Very random 4g and 3g that very often hovered around .010 to the blazing speed of .050mbps down. Pretty much a waste of a smart phone unless you're on WiFi. WiFi is a lot more common these days, but not everywhere.

Just ordered a new Samsung Galaxy S5 in Black. Will arrive on Tuesday so long iPhone 5S you've been solid. I just need something else and Android seems to better right now. I don't pay for phones or service (Company phone).

Be sure and read the fine print if your getting insurance. (the part that says they may replace your phone with one that similar)

I got insurance on my wifes phone when she got a new one, as she has a habit of dropping them in puddles of water / the toilet. She has a slider phone and likes it, but apparently no one else in the world does. She dropped it and cracked the screen so I had a new phone sent with the handy dandy insurance. There was a $50 deductable that I had to pay. Got the new phone in the mail a few days later, and it was a different model then the one my wife had (Not a slider, which is what she wanted...) Looked it up on their site, and it was an $80 phone, while my wifes was around a $200 phone. With the $7 a month they chared, plus the $50, i was in for more then if I just bought that junk phone that they sent new... I'm not sure if the one they sent was new or a refurb. It was not it a box like it would be if it was bought new at a store. Sent it back close to a month ago and still waiting for my $50 deductable back. (This remined me to go file a dispute with my cc company.) Got a new digitizer for my wifes phone, and fixed her broken screen for under $20.

TL/DR

If you don't get a popular phone, and you get insurance, don't count on getting the same model phone back if you make a claim
