This may be a little long...
I am planning the build of a 347. The combination will be a street/strip motor with a lean toward street. Must be very streetable, will be a low rpm motor, (6000 rpm), long runner, long tubes, etc.
I am seriously looking at the DSS LEVEL 20 block. I will purchase the crank, rods, pistons, etc. seperately. These will be forged. Plan on AFR 165 heads.

Will spray 150-200 shot. looking for a realistic 400 hp on motor alone.

what do you think?

I AM A TOYOTA SERVICE TECH. so I have the knowledge/tool for the build.

thanks SN

Seems to be a good plan so far. What do you plan on doing for a cam?
I'd suggest a custom grind from someone like flowtech induction.
As for the heads, you could just as easily go with the 185's due to the stroker. You won't be giving up any lowend, and you will gain some topend power.
i'd also get a complete rotating assembly. Just makes the process easier.
And will this be fuel injected, or are you goint to run a carb?

Many people run what is called the FTI combo, which consists of Edelbrok intake, AFR heads and a custon cam from Ed Curtis at Flowtech. They get the numbers you are striving for.

If your set on afr's and want a 6000 rpm max combo, use the afr 185's. Have your custom cam grinder pick the valve spring and installed height. I would do a rpm II or a holley manifold with a 75mm tb. This will get you around 400rwhp +/-.

I would stay away from the dss block. Since your a dealer tech, i'll assume you have access to a machine shop?

Since your looking to make decent power on motor and then spray a nice hit on top of it, you are taking a BIG chance on a stock 302 block. I'd look into a GOOD block if you want to do this right. A dart or a ford racing R block would be ideal. I beleive the dart is a touch better but priced similar.

I just put my 347 in. My assembly is a scat cast steel crankshaft, probe srs forged pistons and probe ultra light I beam forged rods. I would not use the rods I did for your nitrous application. I'm told you can run a power adder with them, but nothing huge. Their made for higher rpm n/a cars.

whos making the motor.... you? if anything, i would not worry about putting this motor together UNTIL you get a better block if you want 400rwhp and then a 200 shot. i would use a forged crank along with all forged internals and good pistons. If your building the motor, make sure that you get good rings too.
on the camshaft... you almost have to go with a custom cam if you want it to perform the way it shoud and to your desires. Like mike said, have your cam builder pick out the valve springs and you can get them done correctly (not like me, right mike?).

any more questions?

I got a few questions, not to steal the thread.

1. With a 347, would 1 5/8 headers be good? Or would 1 3/4?

2. Do you have to take just the engine to the shop to have the custom cam? Or can it be done with the engine in the car? How much does it usually cost?

3. If you use an intake such as the RPM II, does it add any hood clearance problems?

4. How much pressure can a stock block handle when it's a 347? 5lbs?
