I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me in identifying the rear in my 68 coupe. At some point, a PO has added front discs and I believe this rearend. It is five-lug w/ drums.
I'm finally getting the opportunity to clear out the garage and getting ready to work on the Mustang. Any help in identifying it would be appreciated. TIA.

It looks like an 8" rearend. Does it still have the metal tag on the front side? That would help a lot to determine what it came out of and what's in it.
Thanks--I thought the 8" were oval, but couldn't remember if I was remembering wrong. I'll look for a tag on the front when I can get under the car better later this week. Where on the front would it be located?definately an 8. you can tell by the oval shape

Under one of the retaining nuts on the front. A photo of the front taken from the right side would make it WAY easier to tell if it's a 8 or 9.

The best way to tell is whether or not you can get a 9/16" socket (with the rachet on it)on the two bottom retainer nuts on the chunk. If you can, it's an 8". If not, it's a 9 inch.
Thanks, D.Hearne. I am able to get the ratchet on--answers that question easily enough. Gracias! The best way to tell is whether or not you can get a 9/16" socket (with the rachet on it)on the two bottom retainer nuts on the chunk. If you can, it's an 8". If not, it's a 9 inch.
Thanks--I got a few pics. You can see the tag, but I don't think you can make out the numbers from the pic. It reads:Under one of the retaining nuts on the front. A photo of the front taken from the right side would make it WAY easier to tell if it's a 8 or 9.

2.79 for the gear ratio, I understand. The 8 for 8-inch?
Thanks again, everyone, for your feedback. This is a great learning experience for me!

The "9DA" part is the assembly date code. 9= 1969, D= April (4th month), A= first week of the month.

The 2.79 tells us it's a 2.79:1 conventional. A limited slip would be 2L79. The goop around it tells us it was removed and installed, and it's very obviously an 8" when viewed from the front.
