I've noticed a whine recently coming from my transmission that increases in pitch as speed increases. Most noticeable in 3rd. 4th and OD. Probably because it is at a higher pitch than "road noise" at that point.

I can manipulate (but not eliminate) the sound by placing my hand on the shifter and pushing it firm against the stops or the sides of the plate. What I was wondering is if it is just housing to shifter vibrations, or is it something more serious?

I figured I would start the elimination process by re-doing the seal between the transmission housing and the shifter. Although I recently did this in the past 4 months. So now I'm trying to locate a fitted gasket this time instead of putting down a bead of RTV. I just can't seem to find one. I need one for a '03 GT 5-speed Tremec 3650 and a steeda tri-ax.

Thanks,
Jinx

I wonder if the shift stops are just really close to the tri-ax handle... that would cause it to vibrate I would think. Also did you check to be sure the bolts from the shifter base to the shifter handle were tight? I have a tri-ax and the bolts that held the handle onto the base kept coming loose so I replaced them with locking nuts and the problem went away.

I'll have to look into that when I get it pulled. The only thing I have done recently, that is out of routine, was a 640 mile road trip last weekend, but I did not notice the sound then. There are no drip marks on the driveway, so I don't think it is a fluid issue (changed last year as well as the pumpkin fluids). It's not interference in the stereo amp or speakers. It does not increase in volume or pitch with RPM (put in neutral while cruising and rev'ed it). I don't slam through the gears or beat the transmission by power shifting.

This is my daily driver, so I have a tendency to baby it. I just hope it's not any of the gears or syncros going out.

I thought Steeda said not to use the tri-axe stops at all because the Tremec already has internal stops

OK I've found a gasket, now I can't find 2 other items.

1. Lower rubber dust boot (mine is torn from age)
2. Plastic cup bushing that the handle sits in (usually white)

any places I can look other than the dealer parts counter?

Can anyone verify this Ford part...

1 PKG ( 2 pieces)

There is so much misinformation out there and some say this is a 3650 direct replacement, and others say it is for T5 only.

call up tousley ford in MN. they are a big sponsor over at SVTPerformance.com they offer a discount to forum members that is 10% above their cost.

tell them what you want and they will more than likely know exactly what you want. i had a problem at a couple local ford dealers now knowing what i was describing to them...called up tousley and they knew exactly what i wanted

(i just re-read my post and it sort of sounds like spam or advertising, its not. i am just relaying a good experience, i ordered all my gaskets and things to rebuild the engine in my 99 cobra from them)

Thanks for the links. The Boot will work, but still not sure about the Isolator Bushing. I still have yet to find solid proof that it will work in a 3650. I know the one that I currently have is plastic and it does not have that flanged lip. I did manage to find a thread describing how to make your own, but I would prefer not to go that route just yet.

The 3650 isolator is quite a bit different than the t5/t45 version. The 3650 isolator is larger & snaps on to the ball of the shifter, & surprise!, is not serviced by Ford separately from the shifter itself. I have yet to see one break, but then again, there are a lot of things I haven't seen!

I'm just worried now after driving today that it might be the tranny. I have just over 100K on the clock and that's a lot. I just can't tell for sure if it is the tranny or the rear gears. It is noticeable at speeds in excess of 40 mph in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. While driving into work this morning, I was on the interstate cruising at 70mph. At this point the whine is very noticeable. I pushed the clutch in and placed the tranny in neutral, let off the clutch and could still here the whine. Any Ideas??

Does the pitch of the whine change on acceleration & deceleration? The fact that you still hear it with the clutch in tends to lean toward the rear axle. Have you put gears in? If so, when?

Yes, the pitch changes on acceleration and deceleration. It only does so while the car is in motion. I had the local Ford dealership put in FRPP 3:73s over 5 years ago and have recently (last 6 months I think) had the pumpkin drained and resealed.

Definately acts like rear gear whine. Have you checked the fluid level just to verify?

Because of the near impossibility of diagnosing this over the internet, I'd suggest getting an opinion from someone local whom you trust not to try & sell you work you may not need.

If it is the rear gears, what would cause the whine?? They did not have to remove them (so no need to reset backlash), all they did was a fluid exchange and new seal. Would lack of friction modifier cause it, and if so, wouldn't it have been making noise much sooner?

Thats what has me puzzled. Lack of friction modifier would just cause a popping on turns.

Definitely seek out a knowledgeable local that can help you further diagnose.

We can do "differential diagnosis" all day & still not be on the right track as I'm working off assumptions & not really being able to verify the concern.

At the end of the day, I just want you to be able to know whats up with the whine once and for all!

I'm going to see if I can take it to the place I always have (reputable and I trust them) I only had the car back to the dealer one time since I bought it and that was to get the genuine Ford gears put in by a licensed Ford mechanic, so they were under warranty. But all warranties on this vehicle have expired now. I just don't have the time nor money for this now :(

If I have a choice, I'd rather it be the gears than the tranny.

I hear you all to well. Please let us know what you come up with!

Taking it in tomorrow AM. I have my statement from when they last did the work. I forgot that they replaced a leaking pinion seal. So it may be an issue again, and I am praying that it is still under service warranty.

Good news ---- it's not the pinion seal
Better news --- it's not the transmission

Bad news ---- it's the bearings :(

So they should have the parts by 1:00 and have the job done by 5:00. They have had the gears out before to replace the pinion seal, so I know they know what they are doing (as far as resetting the backlash and marking the gears for reinstall). What's really cool is the mech that did the work last time is working on it this time, so I have confidence in him.
