I have a 98 cobra and was thinking about replacing the sterring wheel which has some sun damage at the top, and was wondering how hard it would be to remove and install a new one, it is equiped with factory airbag and the new wheel will not come with one how exactly do I remove that?? Is there a chance of the airbag going off?? Thanks

Yes, there definitely is a chance of the airbag killing you actually... But if you disconnect the battery and wait ten minutes, your probability of survival increases significantly. The Haynes manual has steering wheel remove and install instructions step by step.

Anyone else find it ironic that a safety device has a great chance of killing you?

its not that hard. I've changed mine with FR500 steering wheel. As long as u follow instruction to deactivate SRS, its simple job after that

to deactivate the air bag all you have too do is disconect the battery and wait a few minutes. i can't remeber the exact amount of time for the reserve power supply of the srs too run out but a few minutes is enough.

after you disconnect all the connectors remove the bolt.. then reinstall the bolt slightly and rock the steering wheel hard up and down while pulling and it will come right off.

There is something in the Haynes manual about damaging some bearing or something if not done properly also... Can't remember exactly what...
