Need Help/suggestions

Hi I have a 89 mustang Gt convertible that's has high miles but drives well and is extremely fast. A while ago i was driving it and i went to shift it into 2nd gear from 1st and it made a clunk noise and started to rev without me going anywhere like as if i was in neutral. Do you have any suggestions as to what i could check to fix it? It is a manuel trans and i am very mechanically inclined. I have never done any transmission work in the past so some suggestions as to what it could be and what i could do would be great.

Thats a very general description, will it move in any gear? Is the pedal feel different, like nothing is connected?

It will go into gear and other gears just wont move and revs when in 2nd. Pedal feels the same. Im hoping it is just a linkage cable but I don't know much about transmissions.

The problem is only in second gear?
Your not making your problem clear.
Does the car move in all the gears except 2nd?

If you physically put the shifter in 2nd, and it revs as if it's in nuetral, then likely there is a mechanical issue inside the t5.

Can't say for sure what happened until you open it and look, but I'm gonna say you sheared the teeth off 2nd gear

he either blew syncrhos, a shifter fork is bent or other internal damage to the T5. Time to remove the shifter and do some inspection.
