the sound of the stock exhaust needs serious work. i want a deep, throaty sound at low rpm and little or no drone at highway speeds. i don't want it really loud (it's a convertible) or raspy/poppy, but something that deserves respect at idle. i'm not interested in squeezing as much hp as possible from an exhaust swap -- this mod is primarily for sound. i live in a strict emissions area and i don't feel like swapping the exhaust every year, and i don't know anyone that owns an inspection garage, so i guess i need cats. i'm not looking for new headers, just the midpipe and mufflers (if necessary). i am considering a mac prochamber or H-pipe setup since they have a nice sound at low rpm, but i have also read many positive comments about bassani's. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I haven't even upgraded my own mufflers yet, but after 2 months of poring over the forums, here's my opinion, for what it's worth:

First off, the mac prochamber has gotten nothing but positive reviews. Beyond that, just get axle-backs. I do not believe that you need to replace the stock midpipe, it flows well.

Here is a list of the most popular mufflers, from quietest to loudest: Magnaflow, JBA, MAC, Borla Stingers/Steeda/FRPP, SLP Loudmouth. Corsa and Bassani products get great reviews as well, but are pricey in comparison ($600-ish).

Highway drone is a tricky subject. Some dude's drone is another dude's beautiful music. Magnafow and JBA seem to be no-drone. I've also heard that the Pypes mufflers are drone-free. MACs and Borlas get mixed opinions, but certainly have some drone. Manual tranny cars have less drone than autos.

Since you've got a vert, the quieter mufflers should suit you well. I'd say JBAs, with the prochamber H. If you've got the bucks, go with the Magnaflow mufflers, the NON magnapak versions. Should be nice and low and mellow.

Me? I've got a coupe, so I'm gonna go with either the MACs or the Borla Stingers. I think. Maybe the Pypes Violators.

The few responses probably has something to do with people being tired of replying to the same exhaust posts over and over. The search tool would be your best bet
