Hey all,

Getting a hydraulic roller cam - right?- ground by FTI for the new combo and I need some help with the specifics. I got the shortblock used on corral and have the details but the builder/owner is taking his sweet time getting back to me and I need this done sooner rather than later. Any help would be appreciated. Here's what I need. (Bolded stuff I know and Italicized stuff I'm guessing)

Engine Details:
Type of Engine: Stock 302 block Deck Height: 3/4 in
Cubic Inches: 331 Bore and Stroke: ?
Compression: ?? Piston Type: J.E. flat tops
Rod Length: ?? Rod Type: Eagle 4340 H-rods

Cylinder Head Details:
Manufacturer: AFR 185s stock Part Number: 1492
Ported or Stock: stock If ported, by who:
Valve Sizes: Intake: 2.020 Exhaust: 1.600
Port Volumes: Intake: Exhaust:
Combustion Chamber Size: 60cc
Flow Figures (.100" through .700"):
Valve Spring Pressures: Closed: Open: Rate:
Rocker Arm Ratio: 1.6

Thanks. If some of this stuff sounds wrong, let me know. I'm a rookie at cars mechanics in general and engine building in particular.

#1 - You kick ass!

#2 - I was thinking custom cam, what advantages would those 2 cams have over a custom?

Stick with the custom cam. No need for a guessing game cam wondering if it'll run.

Your deck height is 8.2". Are you zero decking the block? What thickness head gasket? Your compression is probably in the 10-10.5:1 range assuming its a flat top slug. Ed will set you up with the valve spring package to run, just ask him what installed height to set them. If you have a 331 you have a 3.25" stroke crank and a 4.03" bore.

yes stick with custom ground the afr guys have a cam guy they use. if you talk to them they will hook you up with there cam guy and he will grind you a cam specific for you combo and that works best with your afr heads.

Thanks for the info. To clear things up, is it 4.002 or a 4.030 bore? As far as springs go, I think I'm just going to run the non-upgraded AFR ones that come with. This is going to be more of a weekend pony car, do I really need the upgraded springs?

Your bore will be 4.03". Thats .030" over bore with a 3.25" stroke crank.

I hope you're kidding. You WILL be changing the stock afr springs for your custom cam. You do know the damage that can happen with valve float right? Let me tell you, its a LOT more than the extra $150 for springs will cost you

No I don't. Seriously, can you explain it? Of course, for $150, I'll definately change them if they are that much better. Does anyone know if FTI actually calls you, or is everything done via email?

BTW, big thanks to all of you. I sent out my completed packet tonight and don't have to keep waiting on that turkey!

Any spring offered on an aftermarket head should be pretty decent. The problem is whether or not those springs are appropriate for your intended use. I suggest contacting AFR and finding out more about their springs. Then take that info to your chosen cam guru, and see if he thinks the springs will be a limiting factor for you.

They may work, they might not.

Talk to Ed C (FTI) about the springs. He will set you up with what is needed. Stock afr springs won't cut it. It is possible to kill an engine with valve float. Is that worth saving $150 or so?? Most everything is done through Email and you mail him a money order along with the spec sheet and any emails you guys sent back and forth.

There is no they, its a one man shop. Ed does all the work. Email is best. He will set you up with the cam and springs. Be very specific with your goals when you write down what you want from the cam. Do not be afraid to go aggressive. I went too weak on my first FTI cam and I made sure my 2nd one was much more aggressive. The way the car drives normally, you wouldn't even know its got as big a cam as it does
