Hey guys..i know GT40 threads are everywhere but none that i found answer my questions. im gonna be going to the junkyard soon and i know my local one has atleast 4 v8 explorers. the years are 96' 97' 99' & 2000'. First question is, wich one should i choose? I have an 88' GT thats still speed density. next question is could someone please put together a somewhat detailed list of tools i will needs for the heads, upper and lower?? normally i go in and scout first cause i hate walking around the yard with a 50 lb tool bag..lol so if i know what i need i can bring just that and the basics...also other then the heads n upper n lower, what else should i take and what problems should i look for like cracks, n stuff?? ill first pull the dipstick n see if there is any coolant in the oil...any help is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance

Depends on if you want EGR or not, and if you want the P heads or the regulars. The P heads are suppose to be better according to some, but have the spark plug angle that could be a problem. You may need a different set of headers in order to clear them. As for the intake set, again it all comes to if you want egr or not. The earlier years are the ones to get if you do want EGR, since it still uses the stock internal egr system like on your car currently. As for what else to grab, I would grab the injectors and the throttle body. That is about it really.

im not sure if i want the EGR or not. i guess it would be much more simple but what are the benifits of keeping it?? Im not too worried about the P's because i havnt made my mind up yet on what headers im going with anyway but i read in a few different places that the spark plug angle isnt a huge issue and theres a few ways around it..the Tbody is a must and the injectors would be great cause they are newer then mine and i think they have the 4 holes instead of one..the p heads should be on the 97' i think??

i have a non EGR lower with non EGR GT40 non P heads.so i couldnt run an EGR even if i wanted to. i just jumped the EGR plug to fool the computer, runs fine...

if your just going to pull a motor id pull what ever you find first that has low miles and grab that. id keep your short block and use the top end off the exploder. drop the heads off at the machine shop to get check out then go to town

How did you jump it?? Also i have a guy thats a monster with CNC work waiting for the heads as we speak. im confused as to the pros n cons of the EGR. i live in michigan so there is no emission testing atall(not sure if the egr has anything to do with it) so i plan on removing the smog pump and all that any way. and another thing im needing to know is the tool list. thank you tho that was pretty helpful

You sir helped me alot with my first mustang a few years back. thanks. but that one already had most of the stuff done when i got it. i read that thread n it still leaves me without answers. i suppose i should do a little homework so i understand how all the componants work. sorry for my ignorance but most of the threads get side tracked n off topic

Wiki EGR if jricher did not answer your questions. It seems we have had a lot of questions on this lately. Very short answer, EGR lowers NOX emissions and keeps the computer happy. Does not cost full throttle power. Get the earlier intake.

Just scout the part numbers on the lower intakes and pick up an early intake with an internal EGR. The upper intake has thicker mounting ears and the vacuum hooks-ups are similar to the fox HO intake vacuum hookups.

-BA suffix on the lower is what you want to look for. -BB is the newer, later intake without EGR.

tool list... full socket set (metric and standard) and a breaker bar just in case. i take a craftsman 100 plus piece socket set, a few screw drivers, a knife, small breaker bar and allen wrenches(never know what you might find in the yard and not have a tool to get it with). all fit nicely in the socket case. upper and lower intakes and heads are just bolts so sockets and extensions, make sure you take good size extensions for the rear bolts. if you have 1/2 inch then take that, if not 3/8 will do. if you have a battery operated sawz all then that is a bonus, you can always leave it in the car just in case.

Taylortucky huh?

Yes, as stated stick with pre 97 if you want to retain the EGR. Pull the upper with the matching TB. Do a search and you will find how to do the simple adaptation to the TB so it works on the mustang. The upper intake, EGR spacer and TB are all 65MM. Ditch the curved adapter.

Pull the lower with the injectors , rail and the coolant tubes for the EGR/heater core if you plan on keeping the coolant lines to the EGR and heater core. The hard coolant tubes are different on the mustang intake vs. the exlporer. If you use the hard coolant tubes from the explorer you don't have to drill and tap the lower intake. I reused my old coolant tubes and drilled/tapped the passenger rear lower boss for the lines. If you live in a warm climate, you can get away with bypassing the EGR coolant lines altogether and capping off those lines and the EGR spacer bungs.

I can't remember what size thread you need to tap but I think both are 3/8" NPT ? When you drill and tap. start off with a small 1/8" drill bit and step up to the final size.Drill slow as the metal is very soft. The injectors are the same rated 19lbers but actually flow better due to their design over the mustang injectors. I would throw on a new set of O rings and check for broken pintle caps. Lube the O rings so they slide into the hole and rail easy.

While you are there, find a 94-95 mustang and pull the MAF. It is 70MM and is a plug and play replacement for the stock 58MM mustang MAF.

TO: mikestang63. thank you that helps alot. i have to do the MAF conversion i suppose cause im still speed density but ill pull all the harnesses and what not that go along with it..thanks again
